SUMMARY:Performance:Summer Carillon Concert Series: Jeremy Chesman
DESCRIPTION:Summer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. This season\, all concerts are scheduled at Lurie Tower. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nMetered visitor parking is available behind the Walgreen Drama Center. Additional street parking along Bonisteel Blvd. is available after business hours\, and metered visitor parking is available by the E.V. Moore Building (lot NC10)\, the North Campus Recreation Building (lot NC44)\, and the Art & Architecture Building (lot NC43).\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nJEREMY CHESMAN is an artist\, scholar\, teacher\, and healer (but he’s not as pretentious as he seems). He was the first person to graduate from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in carillon performance (admittedly\, a little ostentatious). He then went on to study at the Royal Carillon School of Belgium as a fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation\, graduating with distinction. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. During a global pandemic\, he decided it would be a good time to earn a degree in Speech-Language Pathology with a focus on voice disorders.\n\nDr. Chesman has dedicated his career to a deep study of diverse facets of music. His research in pedagogy has resulted in the book *Making Music on the Carillon* and two albums with Alfred Music of the music for the Suzuki Organ School\, volumes 7 and 8. His invited masterclasses have taken him to such institutions as Yale University and the Universities of Michigan and Texas. As speech-language pathologist\, he has presented research on the aging voice\, caring for vocal performers\, and laryngeal health. He performs regularly on organ\, carillon\, and harp in such exotic locales as Australia\, Canada\, France\, Belgium\, Sweden\, Portugal\, and the Netherlands. He is happiest making music on Sunday mornings with his faith community at St. James Episcopal Church using music\, where he uses music to help give glimpses of the divine.

DESCRIPTION:The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition\, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!\n\nAs many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan\, northern Ohio\, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists. We rehearse portions of the score during the first half\, break for refreshments\, and then re-convene to sing through the entire work.\n\nSummer Sings costs $5.00 paid at the door (cash only). DESCRIPTION:Explore the personal sketchbooks of Sam Karres\, Greek-American painter and artist\, as he illustrates the daily life of residents in Greektown\, Detroit. This exhibit highlights Detroit’s Greek-American community and urban scenery during the late 20th century. Experience art and life through Sam’s eyes with scenes of music\, dance\, restaurants\, and the faces of the community. Let the vivid watercolor paintings and expressive sketches transport you to a Greektown of the past\, and learn more about Sam Karres’ life as an artist.\n\nFeaturing works from the Sam Karres Archive\, 1955-2012\, held by the University of Michigan Library's Special Collection Research Center. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.
