SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Illuminating the Dark Sector with Strong Gravitational Lensing
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational lensing is a tool uniquely suited to studying the dark sector. Because its observable properties depend on all mass between the observer and source\, regardless of how that mass interacts with light\, lensing enables the study of total mass distributions from subplanetary to cosmological scales. To interpret strong lensing observations in the context of dark sector physics\, they must typically be compared to cosmological simulations. This comparison is particularly challenging for the cluster strong lensing problem due to the simultaneous requirements for large simulation volume and high resolution\, and the large modeling effort required for each lensing system. As a result\, most existing constraints from strong lensing rely on analytic approximations\, or theoretical predictions that do not account for effects such as line-of-sight structure\, selection effects\, or the systematics of mass modeling in observations. In this talk I will discuss how we can bridge the gap between observations and cosmological simulations\, using a particular tension in the abundance of galaxy-galaxy strong lenses in cluster fields as an illustrative example. I will then discuss what the future holds for dark sector inference as JWST\, Euclid\, LSST\, and Roman revolutionize both the resolution and statistical power of strong lensing observables.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: Theoretical Crochet: A crossroads of graph theory\, geometry\, and cat toys
DESCRIPTION:In this talk I explain how I got into the hobby\, and how I later learned that any crochet pattern can be expressed as a graph. Therefore any appropriate graph can be turned into a crochet pattern. Learn which graphs lead to which shapes when we keep all edges the same length\, thereby uncovering the unprecedented utility of the single-stitch crochet. This could also be seen as a study on all surfaces one can build with equilateral triangles. This idea leads to a potentially novel algorithm which may revolutionize the hobby.

DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life.  Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals.  The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nThese events are held Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded.
