SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Power & Partnership in Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Developing equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships with community members and organizations requires taking a critical look at how power operates in university-community partnerships. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to key principles of equity-focused community engagement and discuss how relationships of power shape university-community partnerships for research and student learning. We’ll consider how power operates in such areas as: the structure and terms of partnership agreements\, participation dynamics in university-community projects\, and funding/compensation. Participants will generate strategies for re-shaping inequitable power dynamics\, share insights with colleagues\, and identify ways to apply key principles to their own community-engaged work. \n\nThis session is designed especially for participants who are involved in (or interested in) community-engaged research\, teaching & learning\, project/program administration\, and/or campus initiatives at Michigan.\n\nOpen to faculty\, staff\, admin\, and post-docs.
