DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe session involves 3 simple steps:\n\nBreathing\nRelaxation\nMeditation\n\nDeep breathing bring a pause followed by Relaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself  by listening to your heart’s voice. This is the art of Heartfulness Meditation. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar Series> Finding THOR’s Hammer: Multiomics search for the driver of microbiome function
DESCRIPTION:Microbiomes drive the health of ecosystems on Earth\, mitigating global problems as disparate as climate change and depression. Their complexity makes communities difficult to study\, preventing scientists from elucidating the ways to improve environmental and human health. To understand the molecular pathways of microbiomes\, we developed a model microbial system composed of three bacterial species originally isolated from plant roots: Pseudomonas koreensis\, Flavobacterium johnsoniae\, and Bacillus cereus. We characterized the interactions among the members and identified community-specific genes and small molecules. We found that P. koreensis and its antibiotic\, koreenceine\, influence global patterns of gene expression and secreted metabolite profiles. The broad influence of one small molecule suggests new strategies to study and manage microbiomes.\n\nBio: Dr. Jo Handelsman is the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, a Vilas Research Professor\, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor. She previously served as a science advisor to President Barack Obama as the Associate Director for Science at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) where she served for three years until January 2017\, and was on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin and Yale University before that. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Molecular Biology and has since authored over 200 scientific research publications\, 30 editorials\, and 29 essays. She is responsible for groundbreaking studies in microbial communication and metagenomics. She is also widely recognized for her contributions to science education and diversity in science. She has authored numerous articles about classroom methods and mentoring and she is co-author of six books about teaching\, including Entering Mentoring and Scientific Teaching. She received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science\, Mathematics\, and Engineering Mentoring from President Obama in 2011\, was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019\, and elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2023.
