SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rebuilding Democracy
DESCRIPTION:As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections\, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu\, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian\, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson\, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.\n\nThe evening centers on Nwanevu's new book\, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding\, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem\, Nwanevu contends\, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern\, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.\n\nAnderson\, one of the country's most influential political philosophers\, brings her own work on democracy\, equality\, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard\, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?\n\nThe conversation is free and open to students\, faculty\, and the broader Ann Arbor community\, with time for audience questions.\n\n\nSchedule\n\n*Graduate student workshop with Osita*\nRoss School of Business\, room sent to registrants.\n2:00 to 3:30 pm \nSign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfp8sfCKgchUYJxep4UtwYVBAGXcdZLOLV-M8ozfZJE1lf7VQ/viewform\n\n*Main Event*\nFriday\, October 9\, 2026 \nRoss School of Business\, Robertson Auditorium \n\n5:30 pm Doors open\, light refreshments in the lobby\, and pickup of pre-ordered books.\n6:00 pm The program begins\, including questions and answers at the end. \n7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing in the lobby until 8:00 pm.\n\n\nRSVP -- free\, but please sign up to help us plan refreshments: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3_b6m_2cOK6JzOtUdZQSsU4f1ma7wH6pCxY25x3_Pu5ldDg/viewform\n\nBooks: Ross doesn't allow sales on site\, so pre-order \"The Right of the People\" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9780593449929) and \"Hijacked\" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9781009275392) from Literati by Thursday\, Oct. 8 and pick up your copy at the event. \n\nCan't make it in person? SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Three Martini Lunch: Literary Agents and the Making of American Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Chronicling the story of literary agents in the United States from the 1950s to today\, Laura McGrath uncovers their critical role in the making of American literature in *Middlemen: Literary Agents and the Making of Contemporary American Literature*. From the famed three-martini lunch to the Frankfurt Book Fair\, *Middlemen* takes readers behind the scenes to show how agents influence what we read. Weaving together original archival research\, data analysis\, and interviews with scores of agents and other publishing professionals\, *Middlemen* demonstrates that agents—eighty percent of whom are in fact women—are much more than “middlemen.” As intermediaries between author and publisher\, agents act as advocates\, matchmakers\, negotiators\, and tastemakers\, and they must balance artistic values with the commercial imperatives of publishing conglomerates.\n\nLaura B. McGrath is writer\, literary historian\, and data scientist. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Temple University and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. Prior to joining the faculty at Temple\, she was the Associate Director of the Literary Lab at Stanford University. A former Kennedy Fellow with the Smithsonian Institute of American History\, her work has been supported by the NEH\, the Mellon Foundation\, ACLS\, and the Big Ten. \n\nLaura has written on books\, publishing history\, and data for *The Atlantic*\, *The Nation*\, the *Los Angeles Review of Books*\, and *Public Books*. Her book\, *Middlemen: Literary Agents and the Making of American Fiction* (Princeton University Press)\, draws on a range of methods- data analysis\, close reading\, literary ethnography- to reveal the literary agent's centrality in the development of American literature\, post-1945.
