SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB/DCMB Weekly Seminar Series featuring Toshiro Hara\, PhD (Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at UM Medical School)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nA highly lethal brain tumor glioblastoma exhibits significant internal heterogeneity\, containing a range of tumor cells and associated stromal and immune components. Single-cell and spatial expression profiling have emerged as transformative tools to dissect this complexity and help predict cellular and system-level behaviors. Yet\, it remains the case that these insights have not engendered a more hopeful outlook\, such as diagnostic methods and therapeutic agents. This seminar will focus on two defining features of glioblastoma: inflammation and invasion. By examining these phenomena through the lens of cellular states and cell-cell interactions\, we aim to highlight avenues for intervention. Additional attention will be paid to technical aspects: computational and experimental integration to profile and perturb the glioblastoma ecosystem in patients and model systems.

These art-making drop in workshops offer a hands-on way to engage with the ephemera of underground and independent music scenes featured in the Flyover Country exhibition. You will have the opportunity to make the poster for a dream show with a lineup of your favorite bands\, draw a protest flyer\, put together a collage art piece\, or even design a flyer for a real upcoming event you're planning.\nA button maker will be available for anyone who wants to turn a design into a punk-inspired button pin\, all participants will receive a free handout to take home with them.\n\nJanuary 28th workshop participants are also welcome to tape their finished flyers to a shared display wall in the gallery if they choose\, becoming part of the exhibit while it’s on view.  \n\nFree coffee\, tea\, and treats will be provided at both workshops on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:On hypoellipticity of degenerate operators in testing and detection problems
DESCRIPTION:We study a class of degenerate diffusion generators that arise in sequential testing and quickest detection problems with partial information. The observation process is driven by k independent Brownian motions\, while the hidden state takes n+1 values with k<n. By moving to the posterior likelihood coordinates\, we analyze the Hömander's condition of the operator both without state switching (testing) and with switching (detection). We characterize the cases where the operator is hypoelliptic for the former\, give two different sufficient conditions for the latter\, and discuss their consequences.\n\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG SEMINAR GEOMETRY TOPOLOGY DYNAMICS:  Arithmeticity\, superrigidity\, and totally geodesic submanifolds
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Bader and Furman extended Margulis' higher-rank superrigidity theorem using the notion of algebraic representations of ergodic actions\, abbreviated AREA. The idea now is to apply the AREA machinery in the rank-1 setting\, where superrigidity remains a mysterious phenomenon. This talk will serve as a preview for my talk in the Geometry seminar\, where I will discuss recent progress in this direction. In particular\, I will review important elements of Margulis' original proof of superrigidity and provide some context for the recent work of Bader-Fisher-Miller-Stover on the arithmeticity of finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds with infinitely many maximal totally geodesic submanifolds.
