SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Revisiting Sullivan's Dictionary
DESCRIPTION:Sullivan's dictionary is a correspondence between the dynamics of rational maps on the Riemann sphere and the action of Kleinian groups. For example\, Julia sets correspond to limit sets\, and the no wandering domains theorem\, proved by Dennis Sullivan\, corresponds to Ahlfors' finiteness theorem. In this talk\, we will survey the present state of the dictionary\, make some broader analogies and briefly discuss partial results with the intent of extending this dictionary\, which includes some joint work with Yongquan Zhang.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Transparency and Contradiction
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the contradictions of transparency\, as a concept\, practice\, and aesthetic within the public sphere. Drawing on insights from her recently published monograph\, Nath offers a vision of document transparency located in social history\, American militarism\, and formations of power and difference. In this talk\, Nath traces the Cold War rhetoric that inspired the 1966 Freedom of Information Act through the contested world of transparency activism. By drawing on wide-ranging examples from antiracist organizing\, environmental initiatives\, investigative journalism\, and document diplomacy\, she offers a portrait of transparency as both an inscription of and challenge to power. \n\nAnjali Nath is Assistant Professor in Institute of Communication\, Culture\, Information\, and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her work focuses on the visual culture of American militarism and the archives of state violence. Her book A Thousand Paper Cuts: US Empire and the Bureaucratic Life of War (Duke University Press\, 2025)\, is a critical reckoning with the racial and imperial work of paper.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Tuba Master Class with Andy Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Winds & Percussion presents a tuba master class by guest artist Andy Smith.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nANDY SMITH was appointed to the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra by Sir Andrew Davis in January of 2012. He began performing with the group in September of that same year. \n\nSmith\, from Amarillo\, Texas\, received his Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Tech University\, where he studied with Kevin Wass. He has also studied at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with Dan Perantoni. \n\nPrior to winning the Lyric Opera position\, Smith was a highly sought after tubist in Texas\, where he performed regularly with the Lubbock and Big Spring Symphonies. In addition to his duties in the pit\, Smith has served as the principal tubist for the Grant Park Orchestra since 2018. Smith has also performed with many different orchestras in the Midwest including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra\, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra\, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Smith is a Buffet Performing Artist.
