SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CREES Noon Lecture. When Everyday Life Becomes an Event: Mobility in the Georgia-Abkhazia Conflict Zone
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to sustain an ordinary life in a place shaped by decades of unresolved conflict and political uncertainty? Drawing on long-term ethnographic research in the de facto Georgia-Abkhazia borderland\, this talk examines how displaced Georgians with constructed lives across an unrecognized but highly militarized border learn to navigate a landscape in which mobility is continually subject to political\, material\, and documentary contingencies. Rather than approaching protracted conflict primarily through rupture\, destruction\, or spectacular violence\, Aydemir-Kundakci focuses on everyday eventfulness: how ordinary journeys to attend a wedding\, shop\, visit family\, or go to a hospital can unexpectedly become consequential—when rising waters turn a familiar river crossing into a life-threatening swim\, a document check evolves into harassment or extortion\, or a passport stamp creates the risk of punishment on the other side.\n\nAydemir-Kundakci develops the concept of manageable eventfulness to describe the practical and anticipatory work through which people seek not necessarily to eliminate such contingencies altogether\, but to keep their consequences within manageable limits. Following these practices across changing border regimes\, landscapes\, documents\, and generations\, she shows how people continually recalibrate their movements and anticipations as they strive for uneventful\, ordinary lives amid prolonged conflict.\n\nDr. Görkem Aydemir-Kundakci is an FWO Postdoctoral Fellow in Anthropology at KU Leuven. Her research examines long-term displacement\, conflict\, mobility\, environmental change\, and precarity in Georgia’s de facto borderland with Abkhazia. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from George Washington University and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary. Her writing has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Refugee Studies\, History and Anthropology\, and Anthropology News. Aydemir-Kundakci’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)\, and Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).\n\nPlease note this event will be held virtually on Zoom.
