SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:The Hidden Curriculum: Academic Advising
DESCRIPTION:Academic advising is often seen as a transactional experience focused on picking courses for the next registration cycle. While advisors absolutely help students build schedules\, there’s so much more they have to offer. Sometimes\, it’s just about knowing the right questions to ask. \n\nJoin Newnan Advisors for First-Gen Celebration Week and chat about how to make the most of advising. Relax in our remodeled engagement space\, enjoy fresh popcorn\, and leave with knowledge and swag!

SUMMARY:Well-being:Medicine Needs Poetry: Reimagining Healthcare\, Healing & Human Connection
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is one of humankind's oldest forms of expression. Expressive writing is an evidence-based strategy for reducing burnout among healthcare workers\, and more broadly for making meaning of experiences that are complex\, uncertain\, and difficult to name. This\n interdisciplinary workshop explores poetry as a modality for improving individual health\, care systems\, and healing\, and explores how poetry invites reflection\, deepens attention\, and nurtures consideration of the full human experience within healthcare. Lead\n by Janna Lopez\, MFA\, Creighton University School of Medicine's Poet in Residence\, this workshop will ask participants to consider how poetic expression can support personal well-being\, strengthen relationships between patients and caregivers\, and contribute\n to more reflective\, compassionate\, and human-centered cultures of care. Participants will be introduced to\nPoetic Intelligence as a framework for cultivating powers of observation\, curiosity\, expression\, self-compassion\, and meaning-making.  Everyone is encouraged to attend - no prior creative writing or poetry experience is required. \n\n\n\nJanna Lopez\, MFA\, is the inaugural Poet-in-Residence at Creighton University School of Medicine\, and the first to hold such a position in the US.  She works with students\, healthcare professionals\, educators\, and healthcare teams to make poetry accessible\n as a tool for navigating complex human experiences. She is the author of Medicine Needs Poetry: An Open Invitation to Cultivate More Self-Care & Compassion Through Words. An award-winning writer\, educator\, and speaker\, Lopez previously served as a Santa\n Fe Poet Laureate. Her work advocates for the humanities as an essential component of health\, education\, and human connection.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS GenAI Essentials - Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI tools are increasingly part of academic\, research\, and professional work\, but using them effectively requires more than knowing how to write a prompt. GenAI Essentials is a practical workshop series designed to help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars make informed\, responsible decisions about when and how to use generative AI.Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities\, participants will examine the capabilities and limitations of GenAI tools\, practice strategies for using AI in writing and communication\, and develop more intentional approaches to prompting and evaluating AI-generated responses.Participants may register for one or more sessions.By the end of the Fall 2026 series\, participants will be able to:Evaluate appropriate uses and limitations of generative AI in academic\, research\, and professional contexts.Identify ethical\, privacy\, academic integrity\, and disclosure considerations that should inform GenAI use.Use GenAI strategically to support revision\, feedback\, and professional communication without outsourcing authorship or judgment.Develop more specific and effective prompts by identifying the characteristics\, goals\, and conventions of the writing they want to produce or improve. If you have any questions\, please reach out Dr. Ioannis Chremos (ichremos@umich.edu)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Intersection of Disability and Performance Challenges
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will explore how employee performance concerns intersect with other identities. We will show the interactive process and how it leads to successful performance conversations. You will examine how:\n\n-Workplace accommodations can influence performance outcomes\n-To thoughtfully balance performance-related conversations with accommodation discussions\n-Key stakeholders contribute to an effective and equitable process\n\nWe will use a case analysis to show how you can use this process in the workplace. We will also clarify key roles and responsibilities. Join us to ask questions\, share perspectives\, and engage in meaningful conversations.\n\nYou will learn to:\n-Identify U-M resources and support for employees and supervisors\n-Determine how accommodations\, essential job functions and performance standards fit together\n-Apply consistent\, objective performance management\n-Use support-focused communication and documentation in performance conversations\n\nYou will benefit by:\n-Recognizing when to engage in the interactive process\n-Obtaining resources to identify where performance concerns and accommodation requests intersect

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:Building on the last talk\, we will continue to explore the connection between the completely packed loop models (CPL) and the six vertex model through the lens of the (affine) Temperly-Lieb algebra. We will introduce the Temperley-Lieb algebra as a quotient of the Hecke algebra and see how the Yang-Baxter equation shows up naturally in this setting. We will realize CPL and the six vertex model as representations of this algebra and use this representation to study the relationship between the two models.
