SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Small-scale Lyman alpha forest cosmology: Constraints from high-resolution quasar surveys
DESCRIPTION:We present a new cosmological analysis of the small-scale (k ≈ 1-8 h/Mpc) Lyman-α forest 1D flux power spectrum (P1D)\, using high-resolution quasar spectra from XQ100 and KODIAQ-SQUAD interpreted with the PRIYA simulation based emulator. The Lyα P1D is a unique probe of structure formation on Mpc scales\, sensitive to dark matter models and also tracing astrophysical processes such as He II reionization and feedback. PRIYA is the first simulation suite to jointly span cosmological parameters and inhomogeneous He II reionization\, enabling a full exploration of the covariance between cosmology and astrophysics at these scales. With this framework\, we infer cosmological constraints from the XQ100 and KODIAQ-SQUAD P1D\, finding agreement between XQ100 and eBOSS cosmology\, while KODIAQ-SQUAD shows a biasedly high matter clustering driven by high-column-density absorber selection. High-resolution P1D data  provides tighter constraints on the IGM thermal history and absorber abundance than medium-resolution surveys\, offering complementary information to DESI. This complementarity can help break degeneracies between IGM physics and cosmology in future DESI Lyα forest P1D analyses.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Camassa-Holm Equations with an internal symmetry
DESCRIPTION:In the first part of my talk\, I will revisit my work on the scalar Camassa–Holm equation\, which will set the stage for the second part. There\, I will outline a construction of spinor analogs of the Camassa–Holm equation. In essence\, each orthogonal group gives rise to a Camassa–Holm–type equation with intricate internal dynamics. I will motivate this generalization using spectral deformations of the Euler–Bernoulli beam problem\, which corresponds to the Clifford algebra on two generators with Minkowski signature. The dynamics of solutions of this Clifford extension are far more intricate than in the scalar case\, a contrast I will illustrate with concrete examples. The talk is based on recent joint work with R. Beals and ongoing research with A. Hone and V. Novikov.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: A Unified Finiteness Theorem For Curves
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk presents a unified framework for finiteness results concerning arithmetic points on algebraic curves\, exploring the analogy between number fields and function fields. The number field setting\, joint work with F. Janbazi\, generalizes and extends classical results of Birch–Merriman\, Siegel\, and Faltings. We prove that the set of Galois-conjugate points on a smooth projective curve with good reduction outside a fixed finite set of places is finite\, when considered up to the action of the automorphism group of a proper integral model. Motivated by this\, we consider the function field analogue\, involving a smooth and proper family of curves over an affine curve defined over a finite field. In this setting\, we show that for a fixed degree\, there are only finitely many étale relative divisors over the base\, up to the action of the family's automorphism group (and including the Frobenius in the isotrivial case). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Queer Palestinian Film & the Second Intifada
DESCRIPTION:Drew Paul\, Associate Professor of Arabic and Co-Director of Cinema Studies at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, presents a talk centered on two short Palestinian films—Chic Point (2003) by Sharif Waked\, and Diary of a Male Whore (2001) by Tawfik Abu Wael)—as examples of a wave of queer films from or about Palestine that emerge during and after the Second Intifada (2000–2005). \n\nThe talk examines visual and narrative characteristics of these films\, including violations of bodily autonomy\, spatial constriction\, flashback and traumatic recall\, and use of shadows and darkness. It then connects these elements to broader trends in Second Intifada filmmaking to argue that queer narratives and experiences offer a compelling visual language for critiquing forms of violence and collective punishment that Israel utilized during the Second Intifada and has continued to deploy\, expand\, and refine in the 20 years since.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, and the Program in Arab and Muslim American Studies.
