SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Number Theory: Overview of the Geometric Satake Equivalence
DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will briefly go over the representation theory of split reductive groups before defining the spherical Hecke algebra and stating the classical Satake isomorphism. I will then define the affine Grassmannian\, describe its geometry\, and construct the Satake category. Lastly\, I will state the Geometric Satake Equivalence and\, with time permitting\, give an overview of the main steps of the proof. This talk is intended for those with an understanding of algebraic geometry and a familiarity with the theory of split reductive linear algebraic groups.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Quantum optics applications with subwavelength arrays
DESCRIPTION:What is the potential of dense - cooperative - emitter arrays? These arrays are known for their use in metrology and quantum information as efficient waveguides and mirrors and are now being studied in alternative geometries. Inspired by nature\, we investigate chiral and helical structures\, as well as ring-shaped arrays in 2D and 3D setups.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Reflection groups\, braid groups\, and geometric group theory
DESCRIPTION:Reflection groups\, such as the symmetries of a kaleidoscope\, are generated by reflections and are often finite. If we remove the mirrors and take the fundamental group of what is left\, we get braid groups: infinite groups that\, for example\, record how the roots of a polynomial move around. After a quick look at fundamental groups acting on spaces\, I will compare the relations in these two kinds of groups and see how they connect to geometry. Along the way\, we will get a feel for the kinds of questions geometric group theorists ask about such groups\, and why they ask them. The talk is aimed at first-year graduate students\; the only prerequisite is the fundamental group.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Material Properties Inside Stars and Fusion Plasmas
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAccurate simulations of fusion experiments or astrophysical objects like stars need material data such as equation of state\, opacity and particle transport coefficients of matter under extreme conditions. This means we need to understand how matter behaves when it is very hot (10\,000 to 100\,000\,000 K) and at high density (1 to 1\,000\,000 g/cm3). In this regime\, atoms are partially ionized and significantly overlap\, meaning that the usual low-density plasma physics methods are inaccurate. In our research group at Los Alamos National Laboratory\, we have developed methods to accurately model these plasmas. In this talk I will review the progress we have made and some of the major outstanding challenges in this rapidly developing field.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Charles Starrett received his PhD from the Queen’s University of Belfast in 2007\, where he worked on positronium collisions with matter. He went from there to a postdoctoral position at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA)\, where he began to study the structure of matter in warm and hot dense plasmas. In 2010 he joined Los Alamos National Laboratory to continue this work and still works in this field today. He has developed models to predict material properties such as equation of state\, particle transport and opacity for applications ranging from fusion to astrophysics.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person\, with livestream on Zoom. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Proof of Miyanishi's conjecture on endomorphisms of varieties
DESCRIPTION:If X is a quasi-projective variety over a field k and f is a birational endomorphism of X that is injective outside a closed subset of codimension at least 2\, we prove that f is an automorphism. This generalizes an old theorem of Ax and proves a conjecture of Miyanishi from 2005. A key step in our proof is a finiteness result on class groups\, which is of interest in its own right.
