SUMMARY:Film Screening:CJS Winter 2026 Film Series | *Good Morning (お早よう)*
DESCRIPTION:A lighthearted take on director Yasujiro Ozu’s perennial theme of the challenges of intergenerational relationships\, *Good Morning* tells the story of two young boys who stop speaking in protest after their parents refuse to buy a television set. Ozu weaves a wealth of subtle gags through a family portrait\, mocking the foibles of the adult world through the eyes of his child protagonists. Set in a suburb of Tokyo where housewives gossip about the neighbors’ new washing machine and unemployed husbands look for work as door-to-door salesmen\, this charming comedy refashions Ozu’s own silent classic *I Was Born\, But…* to gently satirize consumerism in postwar Japan.\n \n Attendance is free and open to the public\, and no prior registration is required. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, and doors open at 6:30 PM.\n \n Presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Read more about the film\, including ratings\, at\n https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053134/\n \n Learn more about the CJS Winter 2026 Film Series at: https://myumi.ch/AZ8Ep\n This film series is in partnership with Marquee Arts.\n\n*Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cjsevents@umich.edu.
