SUMMARY:Performance:Tiffany Ng\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. Are you curious about what is tucked away in the University of Michigan Special Collections and Clements Library?\n\nPlease mark your calendars on Friday\, January 16th\, 2026 from 1:00-3:00pm for a special “Rare Books Meet & Greet” specifically designed for the Germanic Languages and Literatures Department!\n\nWe will feature selected German-language materials from the University of Michigan Special Collections and Clements Library. Curators from Special Collections and the Clements Library will also be available for introductions and to answer questions about the materials. \n\nThis open house-style event will occur in the Special Collections Research Center\, Room 660D\, on the 6th Floor of Hatcher South and will be open to faculty\, lecturers\, and graduate students affiliated with GLL\, as well as the four undergraduate students currently writing their Honors theses. Feel welcome to come and stay the whole two hours\, or drop in for a few minutes as your schedule allows.\n\nThis is a perfect time to discover materials for future research or instruction interests and speak with the caretakers of the collections.
