SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Political Communication Working Group (PCWG)
DESCRIPTION:The Political Communication Working Group (PCWG) is an interdisciplinary workshop for graduate students and faculty to convene and discuss how political messages are produced\, disseminated\, and interpreted in contemporary media environments. Our core research topics focus on the evolving relationships between media\, politics\, and society. Drawing on the interdisciplinary fields of communication\, political science\, sociology\, and information science\, our members explore a wide range of topics such as public support for entertainment censorship\, climate change communication\, social learning on TikTok\, political para-social relationships\, polarization\, political biases in AI-generated content\, etc. Our sessions encourage the exchange of ideas and work across theoretical and methodological traditions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bid Timing and Market Efficiency in the Energy Transition.
DESCRIPTION:Utility-scale batteries play an increasingly active role in electricity markets by arbitraging energy across time\, yet their efficiency depends critically on market design. This paper studies a prevalent feature of real-time electricity auctions: bid lead time\, which requires batteries to commit bids in advance of dispatch. Using comprehensive 15-minute bidding and settlement data for all utility-scale batteries in ERCOT from 2018–2025\, we document active dynamic bidding\, rapid responses to price shocks\, and the importance of recent price information for forecasting. We develop an equilibrium model of electricity markets with dynamic battery bidding and show that longer bid lead times substantially reduce operational efficiency and profits\, and dampen complementarity between batteries and renewable energy. Allowing bids to depend on state of charge significantly mitigates these losses. Our results highlight bid lead time as a key determinant of battery performance and market outcomes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Neyman-Orthogonal Tests for Equality of Regression Functions
DESCRIPTION:We develop a test for equality of regression functions across two populations that allows unequal covariate distributions and uses flexible modern learners for regression estimation. We target the regression contrast through pseudo-residuals\, which we construct by multiplying residuals from the pooled outcome regression by the difference between the population indicator and its propensity. Under overlap\, the conditional mean of the proposed pseudo-residuals identifies the regression contrast. Furthermore\, the pseudo-residuals satisfy Neyman orthogonality\, which removes the first-order population bias from nuisance estimation and allows us to test the regression contrast under weaker nuisance estimation rate requirements. To construct our test statistic\, we embed the conditional moment of the pseudo-residuals in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS)\, leading to a simple closed form expression and calibrate its empirical norm using a Gaussian multiplier bootstrap. We establish a finite-sample calibration bound that separates oracle Gaussian approximation\, nuisance estimation\, and covariance estimation errors. Our main result gives conditions under which we can use the same observations for both nuisance fitting and testing\, yielding valid and powerful inference without sample splitting. In a fixed Gaussian regression model\, we establish matching lower and upper bounds for the minimax separation order (n^{-1/2}) in the RKHS discrepancy and show that the proposed test attains this order. We conduct extensive numerical studies to examine size and power across learners and demonstrate power gains over a single sample split and other competitors and illustrate the test on an exploratory application to negotiation dialogues for regression comparison with text covariates.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nodagwzëwêk gi gdankobthëgnenanêk (our ancestors are heard):
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Matthaei Botanical Gardens for an art exhibit by Justin Johnson Nodagwzëwêk gi gdankobthëgnenanêk (our ancestors are heard): Contemporary Visions in Native American Art. September 29 - November 15\, 2026.\n\nArtist Bio\n\n“Bozho\, Justin Johnson nde zhnëkas\, Eau Claire ndë wtthbya. Mshiké ndodem minė Bodéwadmi ndaw.” (“Hello\, my name is Justin Johnson\, I come from Eau Claire. My clan is turtle and I am Potawatomi”). \n\nMy name is Justin Johnson\, Native name Thitthishkewé. I’m a visual artist whose work is deeply shaped by my Potawatomi heritage. Raised in Coloma\, Michigan\, my artistic path began in childhood and continued through grade school and high school\, eventually leading to me studying at Kendall College of Art & Design for four years. My art is a reflection of both personal expression and cultural tradition\, honoring the interconnectedness of people\, animals\, land\, and spirit. Guided by intuition\, ancestral knowledge\, and the natural world. I’m always seeking new ways to tell stories through my work. My drawings are inspiration from tribal stories\, culture\, and values that have been passed down through generations. I have collaborated with the Pokagon Band on numerous projects\, including traditional storybooks and illustrations. Aswell as permanent collections at the Pokagon Band Administration Building and the Pokagon Health Services building\, and artwork featured in the Four Winds Casino gift shop. Some other projects and exhibtions that I’ve participated in would be the Native American exhibition at the Krasl Art Center and a featured as the cover artist with a six-page article in PAN-O-PLY magazine. My murals can be found at the Grand Rapids Public Museum\, the Edwardsburg (Cass County District) Library\, and the Buchanan District Library. Currently\, I’m collaborating with Northwestern University on a new mural for their football stadium. Through diverse body of work\, my work continues to share the stories\, values\, and traditions of his heritage with a wide audience.\n\nArtist Statement\n\nMy work is deeply rooted in my culture\, which shapes both my perspective and my creative process. We see ourselves as part of the Earth\, not separate from it—every act\, every gesture\, is an exchange. When we take\, we give. This relationship is woven into the art I make\, which follows the tradition known as Woodlands Style\, or Legendary Style. It’s not the invention of any one person. It has been handed down\, shaped by countless hands and stories over generations. This style is often described as “x-ray” painting. With vivid colors and layered lines\, I try to reveal the inner spirit of animals\, plants\, and people—sometimes physical\, sometimes spiritual. There’s a rhythm to it that still echoes the Great Lakes region: bold\, luminous\, and full of life. Each piece is a story that’s been told and retold\, woven across time\, just like the spirits that guide us. As an artist\, I try to reflect these values in everything I do. Even when we drift from the old ways\, our spirit keeps us connected. My work is a reminder—a visual invitation to reconnect\, to live more intentionally\, and to honor the balance and respect that our traditions teach.
