SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cover Letters and Resumes for Jobs and Internships for Graduate Students
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is open to all graduate students seeking guidance on cover letters and resumes for positions beyond tenure track roles. It also meets the needs of those applying for internships\, including those applying to the Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship Program. The process of synthesizing your academic experiences into strong application materials for jobs and internships beyond academia can be challenging but rewarding. This workshop is a hands-on opportunity for graduate students to learn how to effectively develop a resume using the foundation that they have laid with information from their CVs. Additionally\, this session will include tips for writing compelling\, tailored cover letters and thinking strategically about how these two documents complement each other.\n\nThis workshop is designed for master's students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance. Brought to you by the University Career Center\, in partnership with Rackham Graduate School.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Game Changers: cures for 21st century biological threats
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 10\, at 10:00 a.m. ET\, the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense at the Atlantic Council will host its latest meeting\, examining how biodefense technology innovators are achieving success and taking on challenges in an ever-changing threat environment. The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the School of Public Health are co-hosting the commission as it visits Ann Arbor for the first time. \n\nBiotechnology has accelerated at a rapid pace\, driven in part by federal investment and policy. Advances in biological sciences create new opportunities for addressing biological events\, and the public and private sectors at all levels have a role to play in bolstering these efforts. This meeting of the commission will discuss the biological threat to humans\, food and agriculture. The discussions will also touch upon the state of biotechnology innovation and federal regulation\, research\, and development activities.\n\nCommissioner Fred Upton\, former Michigan congressman\, will be part of the program along with Arthur Lupia\, vice president for research and innovation at U-M. The School of Public Health will be represented during the meeting by Chief Health Policy Officer Anand Parekh and adjunct faculty member Natasha Bagdasarian\, Chief Medical Executive for the State of Michigan. The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy will be represented by Dean Celeste Waktins-Hayes. \n\nIn-person attendees will be required to show photo ID upon arrival. We highly encourage pre-registration by 5:00 p.m. ET on Thursday\, April 9\, but it is not required.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Stefan Wager\, Associate Professor\, Department of Operations\, Information\, and Technology\, Department of Statistics (by courtesy)\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:We develop methods for estimating how infinitesimal policy changes affect long-term outcomes in dynamic systems. We show that dynamic marginal policy effects (MPEs) can be identified via tractable reduced-form expressions\, and can be estimated under a general sequential unconfoundedness assumption. We also propose a doubly robust estimator for dynamic MPEs. Our approach does not require observing full dynamic state information (as is typically assumed for off-policy evaluation in Markov decision processes)\, and does not incur an exponential curse of horizon (as is typical in non-Markovian off-policy evaluation). We demonstrate practicality and robustness of our approach in a number of simulations\, including one motivated by a dynamic pricing application where people use past prices to form a reference level for current prices. Joint work with I-han Lai.
