SUMMARY:Presentation:If All the World Were Paper
DESCRIPTION:How does our understanding of literature change when we view it not as a disembodied discourse but as a series of material objects\, physical technologies\, and social innovations? In his recent book\, Tyler Williams (University of Chicago)\, reframes the rise of Hindi in South Asia by looking at the physical books\, bindings\, illuminations\, scripts\, and performative rituals through which it gained predominance.\n\nRevisiting several key debates in our discipline -- foremost among them\, questions of vernacularization -- If All the World Were Paper grounds the conversation in the material methods of book history and codicology and opens new insights into the rise of modern literary genres. His work is pathbreaking not only for South Asian Studies but for the broader discipline of literary studies and will be of use to anyone interested in bringing materialist methods to the study of literary history.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Be The Boss Of Your Finances
DESCRIPTION:Dinner provided by Lucky Kitchen!\n\nRegistration is required for food planning purposes.\n\nHave you had to turn down an invite to go out with friends because you can’t afford it? What about telling your family you actually can’t send money home? Or explain to your friends in the lab that you don’t want to spend money on a pizza dinner? It can feel awkward and uncomfortable to say “no\,” but it’s an important part of using your money in a way that works for you. Financial boundaries are guidelines you put in place to help you say “no” with confidence and “yes” with enthusiasm. In this interactive workshop\, you’ll learn the importance of boundaries\, how to create and honor financial ones\, and toss the ones that don’t match your unique circumstances.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Doors open at 5:15\, and programming begins promptly at 5:30 pm.
