SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB Tuesday Popup: Biomedical Gen AI Learning Community presented by Einar Olafsson\, PhD (Microbiology & Immunity)I)
DESCRIPTION:AI tools for research are advancing at a pace that often outstrips traditional academic training. These tools are powerful\, but using them effectively to produce high quality research is a skill in itself. So how do we use AI to move faster and accelerate biological discovery without sacrificing scientific rigor and our sense of engagement with our work?\n\nWe hope to build a community dedicated to keeping up with new tools\, sharing ai-augmented research workflows what work well\, and staying human in an AI world. \n\nWe are launching the Biomedical Gen AI Learning Community!\n\nOpen to: Anyone in the UM bioinformatics and biomedical community - researchers\, students\, and staff. \n\nThe Biomedical Gen AI Learning Community is sponsored by the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (CCMB)

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:History in a Time of Forgetting
DESCRIPTION:What do we — as individuals\, communities\, and members of a nation — choose to remember? What\, or who\, is erased from accounts of our shared past? And who benefits from the official and unofficial narratives constructed about the nation’s collective history? \n\nIn 2026\, as the country celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the current presidential administration has taken concerted steps to shape and disseminate a very specific version of the nation’s history. Notably\, their efforts involve limiting the stories that are told about our past to conceal difficult truths\, ignoring real complexities from the historical record\, undermining the difficult work of historical research\, and seeking to avoid the processes of interpreting and discussing the meaning of our past. But we can also see the resistance to this rewriting and its erasures in the persistence of existing histories\, as well as the continued proliferation of alternate histories in a variety of spheres and locations that are not subject to governmental control.\n\nThis webinar accompanies the publication of Spark Magazine’s upcoming series\, “History in a Time of Forgetting\,” which grapples with what it means to engage in and uplift historical research amid the present national climate. The online webinar will feature series curators Jennifer Brady and Camron Michael Amin\, from the University of Michigan's Inclusive History Project\, in conversation with series contributors Elisa Alfonso\, David Porter\, S. Shani Saunders\, and Tenisha Tevis. These writers take a range of approaches to history and remembering\, exploring pop culture analysis\, community storykeeping\, personal history\, and public pedagogy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mechanistic Insights into Metal-Protein Interactions: Implications for Neurodegenerative Disease Progression and Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Elevated levels of protein expression and aberrant metal exposure have been reported in many neurodegenerative diseases\, including Huntington’s Disease (HD). While there is currently no cure for HD\, metal chelation therapies have been shown to assuage disease symptoms including chorea. These observations underscore the critical need to understand how metal-protein interactions are involved in disease pathogenesis. Our objective in this work is to elucidate the role of copper (Cu) and other biorelevant metals in HD and\, more specifically\, their interactions with the huntingtin protein (htt). We aimed to characterize the Cu-htt interaction and speciation trends in our in vitro HD system\, as well as the influence of disease-relevant Cu concentrations on protein oligomerization/aggregation both in vitro and in vivo. We utilized multiple spectroscopic techniques (circular dichroism\, electron paramagnetic resonance\, UV-Vis absorption\, dynamic light scattering\, and mass spectrometry) that cover a broad range of energy scales\, allowing us to characterize protein structure at the molecular\, secondary structure\, and quaternary structure levels. Additionally\, site-directed mutagenesis of several putative metal binding residues was used to define the roles of specific amino acids in mediating oligomerization/aggregation\, metal binding\, and redox chemistry. Taken together\, our work has led to the first report of multiple copper binding sites in non-pathological htt and provides insight into one pathway for depletion of native htt pools that may contribute to HD.
