SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Intellectual Property Panel for Mechanical Engineering Students
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, November 6\, 2026Time: 12:00-1:30pmLocation: Blue Lounge (GGB 1280)\n\nThis is an opportunity for students and interested faculty to interact with leading experts about how Intellectual Property is protected\, common pitfalls in industry practice\, and what students should understand about IP. There will be short introductions by the panelists and then an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. \nFood will be provided.\n\nPanelists:Mark Chuey\, Ph.D. is an experienced intellectual property attorney\, engineer\, and inventor whose practice spans patent prosecution\, litigation\, licensing\, and strategic counseling. At General Motors\, he managed U.S. intellectual property litigation\, supported global IP disputes\, negotiated settlements and licenses\, handled discovery and witness preparation\, and advocated on federal IP policy. Previously\, as a patent attorney at Brooks Kushman\, he prepared and prosecuted patent applications\, supported complex litigation\, drafted infringement and validity opinions\, and advised clients across the automotive\, software\, telecommunications\, electronics\, and manufacturing sectors. Chuey is a registered U.S. patent attorney and a named inventor on numerous U.S. and U.K. patents. Stephanie is the President of the Renaissance (MI) Chapter of The Links\, Incorporated. She enjoys volunteering\, hiking\, nature photography\, and spoiling her godchildren in her spare time.\nMarco Gatti is a registered patent attorney and focuses his practice on electrical\, electro-mechanical\, chemical and software matters for Cummins Inc. Before joining Cummins as Senior Counsel in Electrification\, Marco held the position as the GM Research and Development Intellectual Property and Export Compliance Manager overseeing several projects in emerging technologies. For example\, he managed a major portion of the patent portfolio around autonomous technology\, including sensor system arrangements\, sensor fusion\, and path planning. Marco also protected inventions around battery technology including cell chemistry\, thermal management design and charging systems. \nPart of Marco’s duties in this role was to serve on the R&D Intellectual Property Review Board. These duties included the identification of inventions for patent protection\, evaluating the business need for protection\, and evaluating the patentability of such proposed inventions.Working on this committee has enabled Marco to have a greater understanding of a broad range of technology\, the importance of patent protection to the business strategy\, and theinfluence on business needs.\nMarco spent several years working at an intellectual property law firm after graduating law school. While working at the law firm\, Marco prepared and prosecuted patent applications covering a broad range of technologies with a heavy emphasis on the automotive industry as well as in related technologies that are seeing an increased presence in the automotive space.Prior to becoming licensed to practice law\, Marco worked as an Engineer for ten years in the automotive industry. Through many roles\, Marco gained diverse experience in product design\,precision manufacturing\, project management and high-volume manufacturing of various automotive products. These products range from stamping metal for fuel tank systems to assembling and calibrating complete hybrid engines for use in a vehicle.Marco is a named inventor on nine issued patents and has written several publications around open source software compliance. Marco continues to give talks about intellectual property law to students each semester at the University of Michigan and served as an Industry Advisory Board Member for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan.\n

SUMMARY:Well-being:Lunchtime Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime yoga is an opportunity to provide your body with some gentle movement\, strengthening\, stretching and balancing. We will use the poses to reconnect with your senses\, to breathe some life back into ourselves\, find internal balance and to recover from the efforts of the work week. The focus is on calm reconnection with ourselves rather than working out. Please bring a mat and a water bottle. Register on our website\, see link below.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar Series> Metabolic opportunities and vulnerabilities in brain function
DESCRIPTION:Our brains are metabolically vulnerable\, as even brief interruptions in proper fueling lead to rapid degradation in cognitive performance. My lab identified presynaptic function as one of the likely loci of this vulnerability and has leveraged the sensitivity of synaptic vesicle recycling to metabolic compromise to dissect the molecular underpinnings of how local ATP production is balanced during electrical activity in axons. Our work has helped identify critical control points that in turn appear central to neurodegenerative diseases and offer new therapeutic approaches to neurodegeneration.\n\nThe Ryan laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine develops and applies quantitative methods to understand the molecular underpinnings of synapse function with a particular emphasis on the control of neurotransmitter release and the recycling of synaptic vesicles. The lab discovered that nerve terminals represent one of the critical loci of metabolic vulnerability in the brain which has led them to explore questions of how fuel availability and combustion is regulated to support synapse function.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Resilience and Sociopolitical Change at Udo\, Southern Nigeria: Emerging Archaeological Evidence from Settlement and Earthwork Investigations
DESCRIPTION:Udo\, an earthwork-enclosed settlement in southern Nigeria\, provides an important opportunity to investigate the relationships between environmental conditions\, settlement organization\, and sociopolitical change beyond major regional political centers. Enclosed by an extensive ditch-and-embankment system covering approximately 11 km²\, Udo occupies a significant position within the historical landscape of the Benin region. This presentation discusses preliminary findings from archaeological investigations conducted in 2026\, focusing on the functions of the earthwork and changes in settlement activities over time.\n\nExcavations across the settlement and earthwork revealed evidence of architectural remains\, collapsed structures\, occupation deposits\, and diverse material culture. Radiocarbon determinations indicate considerable chronological variation\, including a date of approximately 3500 BP from beneath the embankment\, although its relationship to earthwork construction remains unresolved. Ongoing ceramic analysis examines variations in decorative styles and paste characteristics across excavation contexts\, while sedimentological\, geochemical\, and palynological investigations contribute to reconstructing environmental and depositional histories. Preliminary GIS-based hydrological analysis also suggests interactions between the earthwork and local drainage patterns.\n\nTogether\, these findings provide a developing archaeological framework for examining how communities at Udo organized their built environment\, participated in broader material networks\, and negotiated changing environmental and sociopolitical conditions. Rather than assigning a single function or construction episode to the moat\, the research approaches Udo as a landscape shaped by potentially multiple phases of occupation\, construction\, and transformation.
