SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Speakers: Julia Boyle & Marianne Azevedo Silva
DESCRIPTION:Speaker 1: Julia Boyle from Weber lab\n\nTitle: Microbes mediate extrafloral nectary ecology\n\nDescription: Plant-arthropod defense mutualisms involve specialized plant traits that provide food or shelter to arthropods in return for protection against natural enemies\, including herbivores and pathogens. Two examples of such traits are extrafloral nectaries\, plant organs that secrete sugary amino-acid-rich nectar to feed beneficial arthropods\, and leaf domatia\, small structures on the undersides of leaves that shelter predatory and fungivorous mites. Despite their widespread distribution and convergent evolution\, little is known about how domatia and extrafloral nectaries interact with plant microbiomes\, and whether microbes mediate the costs and benefits of these traits. Here\, I combine field observations and manipulative common gardens to demonstrate that both microbes and mites play an underappreciated role in the ecology and evolution of extrafloral nectaries.\n\nSpeaker 2: Marianne Azevedo Silva from Weber lab\n\nTitle: A Tale of Mutualism Exploitation\, Told Twice: The Science We Present and the Stories We Leave Untold\n\nDescription: In this talk\, I will present a study investigating potential exploitation in one of the most ancient mutualisms between plants and arthropods: the plant–mite mutualism mediated by leaf domatia. Herbivorous eriophyid mites (often referred to as “gall mites”) have long been hypothesized to exploit this mutualism\, yet this hypothesis has remained untested. By combining leaf observations with molecular data\, I investigated whether the gall mite Acalitus ferrugineum acts as an exploiter of the domatia-mediated mutualism in American beech (Fagus grandifolia).\nBut this talk is about more than the scientific findings. I will tell the story of this research twice: first\, as the polished\, seemingly straightforward narrative we typically present at scientific conferences\, and then as the much less predictable journey behind it. From the initial idea to unexpected challenges\, changes in direction\, and the decisions that ultimately shaped our findings\, I will share some of the stories that scientific talks often leave untold.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How to Teach Appreciative Interviewing
DESCRIPTION:Activities that ask students to conduct interviews\, particularly of community members\, can be a powerful method for helping students research real-world issues and understand diverse perspectives. While interview assignments are common across academic disciplines\, less common is explicit instruction for students on effective techniques for interviewing. How might we prepare our students to effectively build rapport with\, interview\, and collect stories or information from communities?\n\nIn this session\, staff from U-M’s Ginsberg Center will share methods for teaching students skills in appreciative interviewing\, an approach to interviewing that emphasizes interviewee expertise and encourages interviewers to guard against deficit-based thinking. Throughout the session\, we’ll model discussions and activities from Ginsberg Center that you can use to prepare your students for interviewing. In the process\, you’ll have the opportunity to practice skills that will strengthen your own communication with students\, be it in office hours\, classroom instruction\, supervision\, or other contexts.\n\nREGISTER: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/111999
