SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Metricracy: The Data and Symbolic Politics of a Chinese Social Credit System
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. If you would like to attend via Zoom\, registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/kVZXk\n\nBased on fieldwork inside one of China's most celebrated social credit systems\, this talk shows what actually happens when a state tries to score the moral lives of its citizens. Far from the all-seeing surveillance machine\, the system runs on data that are selectively collected and routinely fabricated—and even then\, the state struggles to make the score mean anything\, facing constant contestation and reinterpretation. This notorious system\, Dr. Liu will suggest\, is less an authoritarian anomaly than a sharp lens on the contradictions of governing by numbers anywhere.\n\nChuncheng Liu is a sociologist of knowledge and technology who studies the politics of data and classification. An assistant professor of communication and sociology at Northeastern University\, he earned his Ph.D. in sociology and science studies at the University of California\, San Diego\, and was a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England. His current research examines the politics of sociotechnical systems that surveil and classify citizens. His work has appeared in journals including *Big Data & Society*\; *Information\, Communication & Society*\; *Social Science & Medicine*\; and *Science\, Technology & Human Values*\, and has been featured in outlets such as The Guardian\, Bloomberg\, and Rest of World.\n\n*Part of the International Institute Theme Year: Sovereignty*\nhttps://myumi.ch/ii-theme

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS GenAI Essentials - Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI tools are increasingly part of academic\, research\, and professional work\, but using them effectively requires more than knowing how to write a prompt. GenAI Essentials is a practical workshop series designed to help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars make informed\, responsible decisions about when and how to use generative AI.Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities\, participants will examine the capabilities and limitations of GenAI tools\, practice strategies for using AI in writing and communication\, and develop more intentional approaches to prompting and evaluating AI-generated responses.Participants may register for one or more sessions.By the end of the Fall 2026 series\, participants will be able to:Evaluate appropriate uses and limitations of generative AI in academic\, research\, and professional contexts.Identify ethical\, privacy\, academic integrity\, and disclosure considerations that should inform GenAI use.Use GenAI strategically to support revision\, feedback\, and professional communication without outsourcing authorship or judgment.Develop more specific and effective prompts by identifying the characteristics\, goals\, and conventions of the writing they want to produce or improve. If you have any questions\, please reach out Dr. Ioannis Chremos (ichremos@umich.edu)
