SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Breaking into supply chains: experimental evidence on procurement training for women-owned SMEs
DESCRIPTION:Women-owned-or-led small and medium enterprises (WSMEs) are underrepresented in public and corporate supply chains worldwide. There is growing interest in promot- ing supplier diversification and SMEs’ integration into value chains\, but limited causal evidence whether interventions to support WSMEs’ participation in procurement are effective. This paper conducts a phased randomized controlled trial to estimate the impacts of corporate procurement training for WSMEs in Colombia. The program in- creases procurement knowledge and readiness\, resulting in a 10 percentage point (p.p.) increase in registrations to corporate portals and an 8 p.p. increase in the likelihood of submitting a bid. Impacts on winning bids are concentrated on WSMEs with prior pro- curement knowledge or experience\, whose probability of winning a contract increases by 8 to 9 p.p. These impacts are approximately 20% of the control means. More broadly\, the paper illustrates how complier-weighted treatment effects can be used to evaluate programs delivered through a funnel-shaped participation processes\, common in private sector development interventions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Pricing Climate Risk: Hurricane Models and Home Insurance Over the Last Two Decades\, co-authored with Patricia Born\, Ben Collier\, and Tobias Huber.
DESCRIPTION:To what extent do rising homeowners insurance premiums reflect growing climate risk? We examine hurricane risk in Florida and how insurers price it. Insurers rely on proprietary\, third-party catastrophe models that estimate property-level expected losses. Using data from these models\, we describe estimated hurricane risk across the state and how it evolved from 2006 to 2023. Expected losses per property from hurricanes increased by 50%. Turning to insurance prices\, we collect the premium rate regulatory filing data for insurers representing 70% of the total market. Leveraging discrete updates to hurricane models\, we estimate that a $1 increase in expected losses increases hurricane premiums by $3.90. Overall\, hurricane premiums increased by more than 200% during our period of study. We consider potential mechanisms and find that the large load above expected loss appears to reflect 1) reliance in the insurance market on local\, limitedly diversified insurers\, paired with 2) the time-varying cost of reinsurance.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering (BME 500) Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Immunodeficient Rabbit Models: A new platform for biomedical discovery\nAbstract:\nImmunodeficient rodent models have become essential to the advancement of many prominent biomedical fields\, including immuno-oncology\, regenerative medicine\, and human cell therapy development. While there are several commercially available immunodeficient mouse and rat models\, biomedical researchers still face insurmountable challenges that cannot be resolved due to the inherent limitations of their small body size and short lifespan\, which limit their utility in translational studies. These models include monogenic knockout lines\, such as Il2rg\, Rag1 or 2\, and Prkdc\, as well as multigenic knockout lines on a non-obesity diabetic background\, for example the popular NSG and NRG mice. Our lab has established multiple genetically engineered lines of immunodeficient New Zealand White rabbits\, using CRISPR/Cas9 technology\, including knockout models of critical immune system genes\, such as FOXN1\, RAG2\, and IL2RG. This talk will focus on the research and development needed to overcome obstacles in the housing and care for immunodeficient rabbit models as well as the characterization of the NZRG rabbit\, a new multigenic ultra-immunodeficient rabbit model.   \n\nBio:\nDr. Pallas is a veterinary scientist and clinical associate professor of laboratory animal medicine at the University of Michigan. His expertise lies in the development and use of genetically modified rabbit models for biomedical research. His research efforts are focused on the creation and characterization of genetically engineered lines of immunodeficient rabbits\, to provide the research community with a transformational non-rodent model for cancer research and regenerative medicine applications. He also serves as the Veterinary Director for the NIH funded National Center of Rabbit Models for Translational Research (NCRM). In these roles\, he leads in-vivo experimental studies and provides guidance and oversight in the clinical\, surgical\, and pathological related aspects of newly generated disease models.
