SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Fragments from the *Iliad* from Oxyrhynchus
DESCRIPTION:At the archaeological site of Oxyrhynchus\, Egypt\, researchers discovered a 2\,000-year-old mummified individual with a sealed papyrus packet containing verses from Book 2 of Homer’s *Iliad*. Dr. Leah Mascia coordinated the collaborative effort to conserve\, identify\, and interpret the heavily degraded text\, revealing the first known example of a literary work serving a functional role in Egyptian mummification. Her analysis of the packet’s seals and folding patterns shows how Greek and Egyptian traditions converged under Roman rule—raising questions about whether Homeric poetry offered the deceased protection\, affirmed cultural identity and status\, or helped guide the journey into the afterlife.\n\nDr. Leah Mascia is a postdoctoral researcher at the Egyptological Seminar of the Freie Universität Berlin and former head of Research Field B “Inscribing Spaces” at the Cluster of Excellence “Understanding Written Artefacts\,” Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures\, Universität Hamburg.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors.\n\nTo register for this lecture\, fill out the form at https://forms.gle/YPAoZjPboAb13BmY9. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar Series> Metabolic opportunities and vulnerabilities in brain function
DESCRIPTION:Our brains are metabolically vulnerable\, as even brief interruptions in proper fueling lead to rapid degradation in cognitive performance. My lab identified presynaptic function as one of the likely loci of this vulnerability and has leveraged the sensitivity of synaptic vesicle recycling to metabolic compromise to dissect the molecular underpinnings of how local ATP production is balanced during electrical activity in axons. Our work has helped identify critical control points that in turn appear central to neurodegenerative diseases and offer new therapeutic approaches to neurodegeneration.\n\nThe Ryan laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine develops and applies quantitative methods to understand the molecular underpinnings of synapse function with a particular emphasis on the control of neurotransmitter release and the recycling of synaptic vesicles. The lab discovered that nerve terminals represent one of the critical loci of metabolic vulnerability in the brain which has led them to explore questions of how fuel availability and combustion is regulated to support synapse function.
