SUMMARY:Presentation:NERS Colloquium: Radiation Signatures\, Passive Safeguards\, and Advanced Nuclear Systems
DESCRIPTION:Robert Hayes will discuss how radiation signatures can be detected and interpreted for nuclear safeguards\, security and nonproliferation. His research includes passive techniques that use materials in the surrounding environment to identify and characterize radioactive sources\, even after those sources have been removed.\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Resilience and Sociopolitical Change at Udo\, Southern Nigeria: Emerging Archaeological Evidence from Settlement and Earthwork Investigations
DESCRIPTION:Udo\, an earthwork-enclosed settlement in southern Nigeria\, provides an important opportunity to investigate the relationships between environmental conditions\, settlement organization\, and sociopolitical change beyond major regional political centers. Enclosed by an extensive ditch-and-embankment system covering approximately 11 km²\, Udo occupies a significant position within the historical landscape of the Benin region. This presentation discusses preliminary findings from archaeological investigations conducted in 2026\, focusing on the functions of the earthwork and changes in settlement activities over time.\n\nExcavations across the settlement and earthwork revealed evidence of architectural remains\, collapsed structures\, occupation deposits\, and diverse material culture. Radiocarbon determinations indicate considerable chronological variation\, including a date of approximately 3500 BP from beneath the embankment\, although its relationship to earthwork construction remains unresolved. Ongoing ceramic analysis examines variations in decorative styles and paste characteristics across excavation contexts\, while sedimentological\, geochemical\, and palynological investigations contribute to reconstructing environmental and depositional histories. Preliminary GIS-based hydrological analysis also suggests interactions between the earthwork and local drainage patterns.\n\nTogether\, these findings provide a developing archaeological framework for examining how communities at Udo organized their built environment\, participated in broader material networks\, and negotiated changing environmental and sociopolitical conditions. Rather than assigning a single function or construction episode to the moat\, the research approaches Udo as a landscape shaped by potentially multiple phases of occupation\, construction\, and transformation.

SUMMARY:Performance:Vinson Lam\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Vinson Lam performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.
