SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: The upsilon invariant and generalized Batson surfaces
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Batson observed that torus knots bound distinguished non-orientable slice surfaces obtained by band attachments which are framed by the Heegaard torus.\nJabuka and Van Cott observed that Batson's surfaces saturate a complexity bound associated to the t=1 evaluation of the upsilon invariant of Ozsváth\, Stipsicz\, and Szabó.\nIn particular\, this implies they possess minimal first betti number among all surfaces sharing their normal Euler number. \nWe exhibit a bound relating arbitrary evaluations of upsilon to the complexity of \na restricted class of foams and show this bound is saturated by foam generalizations of Batson's surfaces.\nThis is joint work with William Ballinger.
