SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Identification and Optimal Reserve Prices in English Auctions\, with an Application to Art
DESCRIPTION:We develop a partial-identification approach for English auctions with private values\, auction-level heterogeneity unobserved by the analyst\, and a potentially unknown number of bidders. Our framework permits restrictions on dependence among bidders’ valuations away from the extreme cases of independent private values and perfect correlation\, yielding sharp and informative bounds on the distribution of the highest valuation and the seller’s expected profit. We formulate reserve-price choice as a minimax-regret problem and derive tractable solutions to two relaxations of this problem. We apply our method to a new dataset covering more than 3\,500 lots auctioned by Christie’s and Sotheby’s. For modern art sold in New York City with pre-sale estimates between $1 million and $10 million\, we find that setting the reserve price 37 percent above the sellers projected value from retaining an unsold lot increases expected profit by approximately $150\,000 to $489\,000 per lot\, equivalent to 27 to 87 percent of average realized profit.

SUMMARY:Performance:Lon Mitchell\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Lon Mitchell performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Umit Ozkan\, *Ohio State University*
DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\n*Abstract:*\nBridged polysilsesquioxane (BPS) is a hybrid organosilica material combining the mechanical strength of inorganic silica with the tunable chemical and structural properties of organic bridging groups. While BPS materials are widely explored as adsorbents\, their application in catalysis remains limited. Here\, we investigate BPS as a palladium (Pd) catalyst support for the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of lignocellulosic bio-oil aromatic model compounds and the hydrogenolysis of trichloroethylene (TCE)\, a toxic groundwater pollutant. Leveraging BPS tunability\, we synthesized hydrophobic Pd supports: aryl-bridged polysilsesquioxane (ABPS) and its swellable counterpart\, S-ABPS (also referred as swellable organically modified silica (SOMS)). ABPS-supported Pd catalysts exhibited remarkable activity for phenol hydrogenation and TCE hydrodechlorination\, significantly outperforming commercial Pd catalysts. Furthermore\, while state-of-the-art Pd catalysts suffer from slow kinetics at low temperatures/concentrations and poisoning by sulfur and chlorine species (SO42-\, HS-\, Cl-)\, the S-ABPS catalyst demonstrated exceptional deactivation resistance. We also investigated the effect of support’s organic content\, aromaticity\, and basicity on catalyst properties\, activity\, and selectivity. Using in situ and ex situ spectroscopy\, X-ray absorption\, and thermogravimetric analysis\, we have established structure-property-activity relationships. Ultimately\, this work demonstrates that ABPS is a highly promising support for noble metal catalysts\, offering superior metal dispersion\, poisoning resistance\, and tunable aqueous-phase activity and selectivity.\n\n*Bio:*\nUmit S. Ozkan is a Distinguished University Professor and Chair of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at The Ohio State University\, where she has served since 1985. A renowned expert in thermal and electro-catalysis\, she has authored over 300 publications\, holds eight patents\, and has delivered hundreds of invited lectures worldwide. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of AAAS\, AIChE\, and ACS. Her leadership spans numerous professional organizations including AICHE\, ACS and North American Catalysis Society. She served or continues to serve on the Editorial Boards of Catalysis Today\, Journal of Molecular Catalysis\, Catalysis Letters\, Topics in Catalysis\, The Royal Society of Chemistry Catalysis Book Series\, Applied Catalysis B\, ACS Applied Energy Materials\, Catalysis Reviews in Science and Engineering\, ACS Catalysis\, Journal of Catalysis\, and Nature Sustainability. \n\nProfessor Ozkan is the recipient of many honors and awards among which are North American Catalysis Society Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Catalysis Award (2027)\, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Margaret Rousseau Pioneer Life Time Achievement Award (2024)\, American Chemical Society George Olah Award (2024)\, North American Catalysis Society Burwell Lectureship Award (2023)\, ACS Henry H.
