SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nodagwzëwêk gi gdankobthëgnenanêk (our ancestors are heard):
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Matthaei Botanical Gardens for an art exhibit by Justin Johnson Nodagwzëwêk gi gdankobthëgnenanêk (our ancestors are heard): Contemporary Visions in Native American Art. September 29 - November 15\, 2026.\n\nArtist Bio\n\n“Bozho\, Justin Johnson nde zhnëkas\, Eau Claire ndë wtthbya. Mshiké ndodem minė Bodéwadmi ndaw.” (“Hello\, my name is Justin Johnson\, I come from Eau Claire. My clan is turtle and I am Potawatomi”). \n\nMy name is Justin Johnson\, Native name Thitthishkewé. I’m a visual artist whose work is deeply shaped by my Potawatomi heritage. Raised in Coloma\, Michigan\, my artistic path began in childhood and continued through grade school and high school\, eventually leading to me studying at Kendall College of Art & Design for four years. My art is a reflection of both personal expression and cultural tradition\, honoring the interconnectedness of people\, animals\, land\, and spirit. Guided by intuition\, ancestral knowledge\, and the natural world. I’m always seeking new ways to tell stories through my work. My drawings are inspiration from tribal stories\, culture\, and values that have been passed down through generations. I have collaborated with the Pokagon Band on numerous projects\, including traditional storybooks and illustrations. Aswell as permanent collections at the Pokagon Band Administration Building and the Pokagon Health Services building\, and artwork featured in the Four Winds Casino gift shop. Some other projects and exhibtions that I’ve participated in would be the Native American exhibition at the Krasl Art Center and a featured as the cover artist with a six-page article in PAN-O-PLY magazine. My murals can be found at the Grand Rapids Public Museum\, the Edwardsburg (Cass County District) Library\, and the Buchanan District Library. Currently\, I’m collaborating with Northwestern University on a new mural for their football stadium. Through diverse body of work\, my work continues to share the stories\, values\, and traditions of his heritage with a wide audience.\n\nArtist Statement\n\nMy work is deeply rooted in my culture\, which shapes both my perspective and my creative process. We see ourselves as part of the Earth\, not separate from it—every act\, every gesture\, is an exchange. When we take\, we give. This relationship is woven into the art I make\, which follows the tradition known as Woodlands Style\, or Legendary Style. It’s not the invention of any one person. It has been handed down\, shaped by countless hands and stories over generations. This style is often described as “x-ray” painting. With vivid colors and layered lines\, I try to reveal the inner spirit of animals\, plants\, and people—sometimes physical\, sometimes spiritual. There’s a rhythm to it that still echoes the Great Lakes region: bold\, luminous\, and full of life. Each piece is a story that’s been told and retold\, woven across time\, just like the spirits that guide us. As an artist\, I try to reflect these values in everything I do. Even when we drift from the old ways\, our spirit keeps us connected. My work is a reminder—a visual invitation to reconnect\, to live more intentionally\, and to honor the balance and respect that our traditions teach.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form\, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.\n\n*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027\, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday\, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM\, and Saturday–Sunday\, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM\; closed Mondays and university holidays.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tanner Lecture on Human Values | Kieran Setiya
DESCRIPTION:Can humour help us cope with hardship without distancing or denial? Does laughter at misfortune manifest what Bergson called “a momentary anesthesia of the heart”—or worse? This talk takes up a puzzle about confessional comedy: why isn’t it vicious to draw pleasure from another’s suffering\, as we do when comics joke about trauma? The answer turns on the fine structure of empathy\; and the upshot is a theory of confessional stand-up as bespoke theodicy: a temporary\, interpersonal solution to the emotional problem of evil. This solution is one we can administer to ourselves\, using humour to confront adversity. Content note: violence and sexual assault.\n\nKieran Setiya is Peter de Florez Professor of Philosophy at MIT\, where he works on ethics and related questions about human agency and human knowledge. He is the author of Reasons without Rationalism\, Knowing Right From Wrong\,Midlife: A Philosophical Guide and Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way\, which was selected as a Best Book of 2022 by The Economist and The New Yorker. His writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, the LA Review of Books\, the TLS\, the London Review of Books\, the Boston Review\, The Atlantic\, Aeon\, and The Yale Review\, as well as numerous academic journals. He is working on a book about laughter as a guide to life.\n\nLecture\nRackham Amphitheatre\nTuesday\, November 10\, 2026\n4:00 PM - 6:00 PM\n\nSymposium\nRackham Amphitheatre\nWednesday\, November 11\, 2026\n10:00 AM - 12:30 PM\nKieran Setiya (MIT) will be joined by Beck Krefting (Skidmore College)\, Lucy O'Brien (University College London)\, and Sarah Buss (UM) for a symposium.\nScott Hershovitz (UM Law) will moderate.\n\nMore information about Kieran Setiya can be found here: http://www.ksetiya.net/\n\nAbout the Tanner Lectures on Human Values\nMichigan is one of nine institutions worldwide that hosts an annual Tanner Lecture on Human Values. Tanner Lectures are funded through the generosity of the late Professor of Philosophy\, industrialist\, and philanthropist\, Obert Clark Tanner\, and his wife\, Grace Tanner. Professor Tanner wrote:I hope these lectures will contribute to the intellectual and moral life of mankind. I see them simply as a search for a better understanding of human behavior and human values. This understanding may be pursued for its own intrinsic worth\, but it may also eventually have practical consequences for the quality of personal and social life.Although the Tanners established the supporting endowment in 1978\, Joel Feinberg's April 1977 lecture at Michigan inaugurated the international series of Tanner Lectures. Each year\, Michigan has a Tanner Lecture combined with an interdisciplinary symposium to which we invite distinguished scholars from around the world. These events are free and open to the public. The complete list of Tanner Lectures at Michigan is available here: \nhttps://lsa.umich.edu/philosophy/news-events/all-events/tanner-lecture/tanner-lectures-on-human-values-at-the-university-of-michigan.html.
