SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Shining a light on the Dark Sector: Probing Dark QCD Signatures with the ATLAS Experiment
DESCRIPTION:The particle nature of dark matter remains one of the most significant open questions in high energy physics. The lack of a definitive signal in traditional searches for WIMP-like dark matter has motivated an increased focus on so-called dark sector scenarios\, in which the Standard Model (SM) is extended with new particles that are neutral under the SM gauge group but charged under new \"dark forces\"\, interacting with the SM only through an additional mediator particle. A particularly compelling class of these models is dark QCD\, where the dark sector contains its own confining gauge group\, analogous to SM QCD\, giving rise to a spectrum of composite dark states. These models can produce striking collider signatures\, including displaced vertices\, jets containing invisible constituents\, and emerging jets\, whose charged particle content gradually emerges as the dark states decay back to the SM. These signatures pose significant challenges for standard reconstruction techniques\, requiring the development of novel identification strategies. In this talk\, I will present recent ATLAS efforts to probe dark QCD signatures\, including searches for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to long-lived particles\, the first ATLAS search for emerging jets\, and the reconstruction techniques that enable the identification of these topologies. Together\, these results illustrate how ATLAS is expanding its reach into dark sector parameter space and opening new avenues in the search for dark matter.

More details about the speaker below.\n\nFor over 10 years\, this banquet has highlighted the work of a faculty member in the HCI field\, introduced the audience to new applications of HCI\, and supported connections between students and faculty conducting HCI research across related departments. We hope to see you there!\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nManhua Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. Prior to this appointment\, she was a Postdoctoral Associate with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. She received her BS in Psychology from Zhejiang University (2018)\, M.S. in Information Science from UNC-Chapel Hill (2020)\, and PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech (2024). Dr. Wang’s research focuses on human-AI/Robot interaction and collaboration\, with a specific focus on transportation safety and the future workplace.\n\nShe will first briefly review her academic journey and then focus on considerations for future automotive user interface design to ensure transportation safety and user experience. Discussions will follow to brainstorm some future topics with rapidly developing technologies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Some recent progress on the intermediate long wave equation
DESCRIPTION:The intermediate long wave equation (ILW) is a model for internal waves in a stratified fluid. The ILW is not just a completely integrable PDE - it also provides a bridge between two other integrable PDEs: the Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Ono equations. In this talk\, I will present some recent results on the ILW. In particular\, I will discuss a priori estimates in Sobolev spaces and the regularity gain of the solution map in the shallow water limit. This is joint work with Rowan Killip and Monica Vișan and with Andreia Chapouto\, Guopeng Li\, and Tadahiro Oh.
