SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Turning web colorings into a poset
DESCRIPTION:Tensor invariants can be viewed as sums over the proper edge colorings of certain planar bipartite graphs called SL_r webs. In this talk\, I will introduce SL_r webs and discuss ongoing work studying the structure of the set of edge colorings of an SL_r web. An (edge) Kempe move on an edge coloring of a graph swaps two colors along a maximal path in the graph that uses only those two colors. We can use these moves to construct a graph P(W\,r) whose vertices are r-edge colorings of an SL_r web W and whose edges correspond to Kempe moves. I will show that P(W\,r) is connected and that it is a poset! I present a few questions about the structure of this poset and answer some of them.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exiting a Community-Engaged Project
DESCRIPTION:An important goal of community-engaged learning experiences is for students to have a positive\, humanizing\, and sustainable impact on the communities they work with. Students reaching the end of a community-engaged course or service project should prepare to exit a community with these goals in mind. In this interactive session\, students will explore what it means to exit a project sustainably\; discuss the outputs\, outcomes\, and impacts of their project\; identify important questions to ask their community partners in preparation for exiting a project\; and discuss and work on their exit plan.\n\nSee all workshops: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/19663

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Misinformation on WhatsApp: Insights From a Large Data Donation Program in India
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. The webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/5k8V1\n\nThis research presents the first comprehensive analysis of problematic content circulation on WhatsApp\, focusing on private group messages during the national election in India. Through a large-scale data donation program\, we obtained a representative sample of users from Uttar Pradesh\, India's most populous state with over 200 million inhabitants. This extensive dataset allowed us to examine the prevalence of misinformation\, political propaganda\, AI-generated content\, and hate speech across thousands of users. Our findings reveal a significant presence of political content\, with two concerning trends emerging: widespread circulation of previously debunked misinformation and targeted hate speech. While AI-generated content was minimal\, the persistence of debunked misinformation suggests serious limitations in the reach and effectiveness of fact-checking efforts within these private groups.\n\n This study makes several key contributions. First\, we develop and deploy a bottom up\, opt-in data donation model at scale\, potentially providing methods that generalize to other social media platforms. Second\, we develop innovative and practical strategies to sample and collect representative samples from social media by combining field work and digital tools. Third\, we provide unprecedented quantitative insights into everyday WhatsApp usage patterns and content sharing behaviour's. The implications of our research extend beyond WhatsApp\, offering valuable insights for developing effective content moderation policies across encrypted communication channels. Our data collection approach can be adapted for studying other platforms\, particularly crucial in an environment where API access is increasingly restricted.\n \nKiran Garimella is an assistant professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers. Prior to joining Rutgers\, Garimella was the Michael Hammer postdoc at the Institute for Data\, Systems and Society at MIT and a postdoc at EPFL\, Switzerland. His research focuses on using digital data for social good\, including areas like polarization\, misinformation and human migration. His work on studying and mitigating polarization on social media won the best paper awards at top computer science conferences. Kiran received his Ph.D. in computer science at Aalto University\, Finland\, and Masters & Bachelors from IIIT Hyderabad\, India. Prior to his Ph.D.\, he worked as a Research Engineer at Yahoo Research\, Barcelona\, and QCRI\, Doha.\n\n*Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at csas@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, GETSEA will host two short films highlighting the challenges to art and expression in Malaysia’s complex political\, legal\, and societal landscape.\n \n Sotong follows four fierce local drag queens who were part of the 2022 Halloween party raided by the authorities. One of them\, Juan\, was arrested for ‘a man dressing up as a woman’. Two years later\, they revisit on the fallout of that night as they continue to perform underground and nurture the Malaysian drag scene in all its beauty\, joy\, and pain.\n \n Against This Messy World is a deeply introspective and visually captivating short documentary that delves into the heart and soul of artistic expression in Malaysia. A personal exploration\, narrated by Malaysian artists\, this documentary takes viewers on an evocative journey to understand the essence and purpose of being an artist in a world marked by chaos and uncertainty and piece together conversations and unfiltered moments in their lives.\n\n*Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at valdezjo@umich.edu.
