SUMMARY:Presentation:NERS Colloquium: Arms Control with protons and neutrons: on the ground and in the sky
DESCRIPTION:Areg Danagoulian will explore how nuclear physics can provide new tools for arms control and treaty verification\, from neutron-based techniques for authenticating nuclear warheads to the use of cosmic-ray protons to verify the absence of nuclear weapons in space. His work connects fundamental nuclear physics with practical challenges in international security and nonproliferation.\n\nAreg Danagoulian is an Associate Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. He did his PhD research in Experimental Nuclear Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Areg’s PhD thesis focused on experiments that used real Compton scattering on the proton at 2-6 GeV\, allowing to probe the proton's internal structure and understand how it couples to external excitations. After his PhD Areg worked at Los Alamos as a postdoctoral researcher\, and then as a senior scientist at Passport Systems\, Inc. (PSI). At PSI Areg focused on the development of Prompt Neutron from Photofission (PNPF) technique\, which allows to rapidly detect shielded fissionable materials in the commercial cargo traffic. Areg's current research interests focus on nuclear physics applications in nuclear security\, such areas nuclear nonproliferation\, technologies for treaty verification\, nuclear safeguards\, and cargo security.\n\nProf. Danagoulian's research has earned him and his research team a number of important awards\, such as:\n\nFellow of the American Physical Society\, Forum on Physics and Society (2025). Citation: “For seminal technological contributions in the field of arms control and cargo security\, which significantly benefit international security.”\n\nArms Control Association’s Arms Control Person(s) of the Year award\, “For developing an innovative new nuclear disarmament verification process using neutron beams\,” 2020. \n\nAmerican Nuclear Society Radiation Science and Technology Award\, “For technology-critical contributions exploiting nuclear resonance phenomena for warhead verification in nuclear disarmament and nuclear detection techniques in cargo security\,” 2019\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:T.REX
DESCRIPTION:With stunning CGI visuals and the latest research from leading paleontologists\, the film offers audiences a fresh perspective on the GOAT (Greatest Of All Tyrants): Tyrannosaurus rex. Anchored by the true story of the young fossil hunters who made the discovery of a lifetime when they spotted a large fossilized leg bone on a walk on public lands in North Dakota\, T. REX intercuts the remarkable fossil dig\, with cutting edge computer graphics that bring the iconic T. rex to life—from hatchling to hulking adult. Narrated by Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill\, T. REX explores the newest science that has helped reinvent our understanding of the iconic predator.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Understanding Development and Familial Transmission of Psychopathology: Insights From Genetically and Causally Informative Studies
DESCRIPTION:A complete understanding of how psychopathology develops over time\, is transmitted across generations\, and is influenced by familial and broader social contexts is necessary for developing comprehensive etiological models of psychopathology and related processes\, and identification of causal mechanisms is necessary for developing the most targeted and effective prevention and interventions. Yet\, many of our most fundamental questions about etiological contributors to the development of psychopathology and mechanisms of its familial transmission cannot be definitively answered using usual study designs. Drawing from a developmental psychopathology framework and using complementary\, longitudinal\, genetically informative\, and quasi-experimental study designs in multiple largescale cohorts\, my work aims to address this challenge. In this talk\, I will present a series of studies\, including identifying risk factors for and effects of depression\, differentiating pre-existing liability toward substance use from exposure-related effects on brain\, examining effects of prenatal substance exposure on infant and child development\, distinguishing genetic from environmental mechanisms of the familial transmission of psychopathology\, and considering whether and how cannabis legalization has a causal effect on children\, adolescents\, and families. This work also considers broader contextual factors that may influence exposure to risk and adversity\, as well as access to protective resources. Although no single study or approach is sufficient on its own\, leveraging these multiple genetically and causally informative study designs in a complementary fashion can help us begin to triangulate on etiology and causal mechanisms to better understand the development and familial transmission of psychopathology.\n\n*The talk will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.
