SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Veterans Week - Vietnam War Veteran Panel
DESCRIPTION:Hear Vietnam veterans talk about their experiences during that controversial war and how they were treated when they returned home. This year\, we are honored to have a nurse who served in Vietnam. A total of nearly 9\,000 women served as nurses in the Vietnam War. Their average age was 23 and most had just graduated from nursing school when they volunteered. Eight of them were killed in action\, while treating and saving others. \n\n>Panelist Mary Stolz\, an Iron Mountain Michigan resident\, kept wounded soldiers alive. \n>Panelist Denny Schoville was one such critically wounded casualty. The helicopter pilot\, with a Distinguished Flying Cross\, two Silver Stars\, and a Bronze Star\, was shot in the temple and left calf and still managed to land his bullet-riddled chopper. A nurse stabilized him so that he could be flown to a fully equipped Army hospital in Japan. \n>Panelist Peter Dodge trained as an Army medic and volunteered for Vietnam\, but was sent to Thailand to provide public health services. As a result of Peter's and fellow MEDCAPS work\, Vietnam was only the second US war in which more men died of diseases than in battle. \n>The panel is moderated by Lawrence Dolph\, who served on Night Ambush Patrol for the 9th Infantry Division and later as a US Army News Correspondent.\n\nTheir remarkable stories of service\, sacrifice\, and perseverance will change how you look at the Vietnam War and the men and women who served there.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Race between AI Costs and Capabilities: Task-Based Automation When Machines Improve
DESCRIPTION:What drives the patterns of AI automation: expanding capabilities or falling computing costs? We develop a quantitative task-based theory of production in which firms choose among various vintages of an automation technology (in this case\, AI models) for each task\, subject to adoption frictions. Larger models are more capable but require more computing\, so automation of some tasks relies on models smaller than the frontier. An expanding frontier lowers costs only in tasks that may rely on new models\, while cheaper computing lowers automation costs for all tasks that AI can perform. We measure the capabilities and costs of AI models across different tasks using a new survey: workers grade the output of 41 language models on samples of 7\,400 production tasks in over 800 occupations. The token costs for producing each task/model combination offer measures of the corresponding computing costs. Using this data\, along with additional moments of AI spending and occupational adoption\, we quantify our model and use it to project the future path of AI automation given trends in capabilities and computing costs. The model predicts that by 2050 AI will perform 54 percent of all work in the US economy. Halving the rate at which computing prices fall lowers this share to 39 percent\, while halving the growth rate of frontier models leaves it almost unchanged.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
