SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Systems Thinking: From Logic Gates to Product Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by alum Jim Simpson (BS CS 1998) — Advisor\, Loretta Technologies\; Former CEO\, Blumira\; Former Director of Product Management\, Duo Security — as part of our Alumni Lecture Series.\n\nBio: Jim Simpson is a seasoned technology executive with over two decades of cybersecurity experience. As CEO of Blumira\, he led the company’s mission to democratize enterprise-grade security for small and medium-sized businesses. Previously\, Simpson held key product leadership roles at Duo Security (acquired by Cisco for $2.35 billion) and Arbor Networks (acquired by NETSCOUT). A University of Michigan computer science graduate\, he currently provides fractional product and executive services while advising technology companies on strategic growth and security initiatives. Simpson is recognized for his user-centric approach to security challenges and his advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the cybersecurity industry.\n\nAbstract: CSE teaches you how to think about systems: understanding the layer below\, building intentionally on the layer above. Most of us think this lesson applies narrowly to code\, to architecture\, to the technical work we do after graduation. It doesn’t. It scales.\n\nIn this talk\, I’ll trace a nonlinear path from EECS 270 to starting product at Duo Security to leading product strategy today\, showing how the same systems-thinking lens applies at every level. I’ll share stories from constrained group projects\, building company operating systems\, and why the bottleneck in product leadership has shifted from execution speed to strategic clarity.\n\nWhether you’re early in your career deciding between technical and non-technical paths\, or years in and wondering how your CSE background applies beyond engineering\, this talk is about recognizing that systems thinking is your real competitive advantage. And it scales all the way up.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Veterans Week: Women of the Military
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to bring back this highly popular panel during Veterans Week 2026 (November 9-13) at U-M!\nSince the Revolutionary War women have served vital supportive roles in the U.S. military. Now women are serving along side their male counterparts in all aspects of service\, including combat roles. Too often they have to overcome sexist stereotypes\, sexual harassment or worse while they are serving their country. Come hear stories of six women who are faculty\, staff and students at U-M as they share their stories of perseverance\, grit and courage.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Valuatively independent bases for Calabi-Yau varieties
DESCRIPTION:From the perspective of the Gross-Siebert program\, the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau varieties is governed by certain canonical bases for the sections of the powers of an ample line bundle on a degeneration. It is expected that the pairing between these basis elements and valuations in the essential skeleton satisfies an independence condition\, similar to the pairing between monomials and monomial valuations on a toric variety. In this talk\, I will explain how tools from birational geometry and K-stability can be used to construct bases that fulfill this condition. This is joint work with Yuchen Liu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB Bioinformatics Seminar Series featuring Irina Gaynanova\, PhD (U-M\, Assoc. Prof. of Biostatistics)
DESCRIPTION:Short Bio: Dr. Gaynanova’s research focuses on the development of statistical methods for analysis of modern high-dimensional biomedical data. Her methodological interests are in data integration\, machine learning and high-dimensional statistics\, motivated by challenges arising in analyses of multi-omics data (e.g.\, RNASeq\, metabolomics\, micribiome) and data from wearable devices (continuous glucose monitors\, ambulatory blood pressure monitors\, activity trackers). Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation\, and recognized with a David P. Byar Young Investigator Award and an NSF CAREER Award.\n\nAbstract: Multi-view data\, where different data types are collected from the same samples\, are increasingly prevalent due to advances in omics and wearable technologies. For instance\, The Cancer Genome Atlas provides omics data from multiple platforms\, while wearable devices such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and accelerometers record high-frequency signals alongside tabular clinical characteristics. Integrating these views can enhance scientific insights but also presents significant analytic challenges. In this talk\, I will start with multi-omics data\, briefly reviewing our work on handling mixed variable types (continuous\, binary\, zero-inflated) and on distinguishing between joint and individual signals. I will then turn to settings where one of the views is representing wearable signal. Standard analyses typically reduce these recordings to a handful of scalar summaries. An appealing alternative is to treat each subject’s measurements as a sample from a subject-specific distribution and to take that distribution itself as the unit of analysis. I will illustrate regression with distribution-valued responses\, including extensions beyond the univariate case where optimal transport becomes computationally prohibitive\, and conclude with ongoing work using these distributional representations in genetic association studies. The methods will be illustrated on data from multi-omics and CGM studies.
