DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/93973918910?jst=2\nIn-Person: Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project PML2000\n\nAbstract:\nPhotons bouncing back and forth many times between highly reflecting mirrors provides\na novel way to mediate interactions between laser-cooled atoms held between the\nmirrors. These all-to-all photon-mediated interactions provide a unique set of tools for\nboth quantum simulation and sensing.  In this talk\, I will discuss our efforts to sculpt\nthese interactions in order to expand the palette of cavity-mediated interactions that can\nbe a realized\, including exchange interactions [1\, 2]\, many-body gap protection of\nquantum coherence [1-3]\, XYZ interactions [4]\, 3 &amp\; 4-body interactions [5]\, and\ndissipative interactions [6-7]. Thompson earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Florida State University and his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  His doctoral work with David E. Pritchard focused on comparing the masses of two trapped ions with precision better than ten parts in a trillion for testing Einstein's mass-energy relationship E=mc2.  As part of this work\, James and his colleague Simon Rainville also discovered a novel method for making non-demolition measurements of the quantum state of single molecules.  James was awarded the APS DAMOP thesis prize for this work.  James moved to the MIT laboratory of Vladan Vuletic at the MIT/Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms for his postdoctoral work\, where he developed atomic quantum memories and entangled photon sources using laser-cooled atoms.  Since moving to JILA and the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado\, James's work has focused on studying how to exploit collective and quantum effects to advance precision measurement and explore many-body physics. His work includes the demonstration of highly entangled spin-squeezed states\, the realization of superradiant lasers based on mHz linewidth transitions\, development of novel spectroscopy and laser cooling techniques\, and explorations of quantum many-body simulation and dynamical phase transitions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Wealth Dynamics and Path Dependence
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies wealth dynamics and capital allocation under different trade regimes and shows that trade integration can make specialization history-dependent even when sectors have the same long-run productivity potential. I develop a dynamic multisector general equilibrium model with heterogeneous entrepreneurs facing persistent productivity shocks. Financial frictions make firms' ability to expand depend on their wealth\, which connects sectoral production and growth to wealth distribution. In a closed economy\, relative prices respond to scarcity: initially disadvantaged sectors become more profitable and catch up with initially favored sectors.\nIn an open economy\, international markets limit this price response\; initially favored sectors accumulate more wealth and account for larger long-run shares of production. I implement a quantitative analysis using data from Peruvian firms\, households\, national accounts\, tariffs\, and international trade to quantify how initial wealth allocation shapes sectoral specialization and how domestic and foreign trade policies affect its persistence.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, police departments across the country have adopted body-worn cameras at a dizzying pace. While we typically think of these recordings as evidence to prove or disprove police misconduct\, they also provide a source of data for the thousands of interactions law enforcement have with the public each day. In this talk\, I’ll share what this footage can tell us as data: insights into the everyday realities of policing\, and tools for more accountable and just law enforcement.

Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/kVx6z.\n\nBased on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Ainu Mosir (Hokkaido\, Japan)\, this talk considers the crucial role that rivers play in Indigenous Ainu articulations of sovereignty and futurity. As an important medium through which kin-based\, territorial\, and cosmological rights and responsibilities continue to be expressed\, rivers connect ancestral Ainu lifeways with visions of an Indigenous future. In their struggles for Indigenous rights today\, Ainu activists continue to focus on rivers as the central locus of Ainu sovereignty and the origin from which Ainu cultural and territorial rights emerge\, envisioning and enacting futures of flourishing and abundance that are rooted in ancestral relationships to their native lands and waters and the more-than-human beings who inhabit them. In so doing\, they insist upon a future for the Ainu as an Indigenous people\, challenging Japan’s ongoing settler-colonial structure of Ainu dispossession and elimination.\n\nDr. Michael J. Ioannides is a teaching postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. He received his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of California Santa Barbara\, in June 2026\, with an interdisciplinary emphasis on environment and society. His research focuses on Ainu environmental and Indigenous rights activism in rural Hokkaido\, Japan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar by Jeongbin Park (Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSpatially resolved transcriptomics (SRT) measures gene expression in thousands to millions of spatial locations\, providing information on the spatial organization of various tissues. The spatial organization for complex tissues forms a hierarchical structure\, from individual genes\, to cell types and co-localized cell groups\, to large spatial domains. Although many computational methods identify spatial domains using SRT data\, modeling the hierarchical organization still needs improvement. Moreover\, the latest SRT technologies (e.g.\, 10x Xenium and Visium HD) measure over 0.1 million spots\, further challenging the scalability of previous computational methods. We developed COMPOSITION that models the hierarchical spatial structure of a tissue profiled by the latest SRT technologies and scales to the large number of spots in latest SRT technologies. We explicitly model the conditional probability relationships between adjacent layers of the tissue hierarchy in COMPOSITION and develop a neural network structure based on variational autoencoder (VAE) that enables fast inference of the posterior probability of the model.\n\nAbout the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series\n\nThe DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar Series is held in Medical Science Building 1 (MS1)\, Room 4B700\, each Thursday at 12pm EST.
