SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The physical exhibit is accompanied by a virtual component that encourages audiences to engage with each mother's birth story.\n\nThe Lane Hall Exhibit Space is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Michigan. \n\nBlack Birth Joy\nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 – Friday\, January 15\, 2027\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\, 204 S State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\nOpen M–F\, 9AM–5PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Faster and More Fun: American Home Cooking in the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Perspectives on Contemporary Korea | Transpacific Lives in an American Century: Ilhan New as Method
DESCRIPTION:The Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan is proud to host an international conference focused on the life and work of Ilhan New as part of the Center’s Perspectives on Contemporary Korea series. A national hero in Korea and the University of Michigan’s most famous Korean alumnus\, Ilhan New’s remarkable biography is well known. Born in Pyongyang\, New came to the United States at a young age and received primary and secondary education in the Midwest. In Hastings\, Nebraska\, New attended the Korean youth military school established by Park Yong-man in 1909. From Hastings\, New moved to Detroit and then to nearby Ann Arbor to pursue a degree in business and commerce at the University of Michigan. While studying at Michigan New met his future spouse and trailblazing partner Mary Woo. In 1922\, New and a friend from the University of Michigan named Wally Smith launched the brand La Choy and turned a seemingly impossible chance encounter into one of the most spectacular examples of the American Dream at Smith’s grocery in Detroit. New returned to his homeland in 1926 at the age of 31 and established a successful pharmaceutical company named Yuhan yanghaeng. In the final years of the Pacific War\, New once again demonstrated his ability to shape new forms of Asian\, American\, and Asian American agency as a consultant for the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS). After liberation in 1945\, New made significant contributions to the rebuilding of South Korea through education\, public health\, and philanthropy.\n\nFar from taking New as an extraordinary individual who led an exceptional life\, the conference will approach New’s biography as a point of entry that opens onto several important avenues for thinking about Korean\, American\, and Asian American histories of the modern era\, as well as a method for interrogating these histories’ complex imbrications with one another. Particular attention will be paid to the lesser known forces that shaped New’s trajectory and the transformative impact of New’s life on these and other historical forces. Using Ilhan New not as case study but as method\, this conference will examine\, among other things\, the global footprint of Midwestern values and religiosity\, the ethnicity of global industry and global nature of ethnic industry\, fighting for a nation that is both singular and plural\, and Korea’s diasporic century.\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.*
