DESCRIPTION:Internship or Job Search\n\nWhether you have applied to internships or jobs before or are just getting started\, this workshop is helpful in determining the preparation\, search\, and application process of locating an internship or job.\n\n \n\nThis workshop typically addresses questions like:\n\nHow can you prepare before the search? (identifying goals\, values\, must-haves)\n\nWhere can you search for opportunities? (U-M affiliated sites and beyond)\n\nWhat application material may be required? (résumé /CV/cover letters)\n\nHow can the Hub assist you with these materials?\n\nNote: For those attending in-person as part of this hybrid workshop\, seating is first come first served. We anticipate a full room\, so please plan accordingly. This registration link directs to the in-person version\; please see the entry for our virtual workshop on the same date to register for the virtual option.\n\n \n\nThe Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first floor\, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the first floor as well\, and places to sit or stand during the event. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Do active galactic nuclei behave the way galaxy formation theorists need them to?
DESCRIPTION:I discuss what can be learned about galaxy formation theories from studying how active galactic nuclei\n(AGN) occupy galaxies. In simulations\, AGN play the role of quenching and preventing further star\nformation in the most massive galaxies\, preventing them from becoming even higher stellar mass than they\nare. The cosmological simulations require subgrid physics to describe star formation processes as well as\nblack hole growth and feedback\, both of which are complicated\, nonlinear processes occurring at AU scales\,\nwithin simulations with at best about 10 to 100 pc resolution. Among the major cosmological simulation\ncodes\, there are many different implementations of this subgrid physics that all lead to predictions of the\nstellar mass function and star formation rates of galaxies that agree with observations\, and this agreement is\ntaken very seriously as validation of the basic picture. These different implementations nevertheless lead to\nquite different predictions for how AGN populate galaxies as a function of mass and star formation rate.\nThese predictions\, in contrast to those regarding stellar properties of galaxies\, are almost never compared\nagainst observations. I describe a research program to perform these tests. This program requires a major\nrevision of the statistics of AGN demographics in local galaxies\, which in many cases have been performed\npreviously without regard to the dramatic selection effects on AGN samples in galaxies. Although there are\nmany methodological difficulties in interpreting the AGN predictions from galaxy formation simulations\, I\nargue that observations of the AGN population can be used to distinguish between the simulations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Battery SoX Intelligence: Millivolts Unlocking Gigawatt-hours
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nScaling grid storage with repurposed EV batteries requires precise degradation tracking. For LFP\, a flat open-circuit voltage curve obscures cell aging. This presentation demonstrates how monitoring millivolt-level behaviors extracts gigawatt-hours of latent capacity. By combining physics-informed models with electrochemical state estimation\, we resolve LFP and graphite phase-transitions. Operational data shows how these voltage signatures drive predictive aging forecasts and anomaly detection\, unlocking safe operation beyond industry-standard warranties. \n\nBiography:\nDr. Kandler Smith is Technical Fellow for Energy Storage Modeling at Moment Energy\, a second-use battery energy storage company. He previously worked for 19 years at U.S. DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory as Team Lead for Electrochemical Modeling & Data Sciences\, developing multi-physics models of battery performance\, lifetime\, safety and technoeconomics. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from Penn State University (2006) where his research focused on electrochemical modeling\, estimation and control of lithium-ion batteries.\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location\, please check the related link the week of this event
