SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | Thinking Inside the Box: Quantum Many-Body Frontiers with Ultracold Fermions
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: In the Meeting Invite\nIn-Person: West Hall 411\n\nAbstract:\nRecent progress in the control of complex quantum systems has made it possible to revisit\nlong-standing questions\, realize thought experiments once deemed inaccessible\, and explore\nnew terrain. Our contribution to this progress has been the development of an experimental\nplatform that creates ultracold quantum fluids in spatiotemporally programmable optical\npotentials\, engineered with advanced electro-optic devices.\nIn this talk\, I will share our explorations into the physics of fermions confined in ‘boxes of\nlight’\, a deceptively simple stage that gives rise to remarkably rich behavior [1]. Highlights\ninclude few-body recombination in multicomponent fermions [2\,3]\, the first observation of\nthe quantum Joule–Thomson effect for fermions [4]\, strong-drive spectroscopy of Fermi-\npolaron quasiparticles [5]\, the first direct observation of the Lindhard response [6]\, the\nobservation of the emergence and breakdown of Fermi’s Golden Rule in a strongly\ninteracting system [7]\, and the unveiling of a new correspondence between short-time and\nlong-time behavior in quantum dynamics [8]. Together\, these studies span a wide range of\ntopics—thermodynamics\, few-body physics\, quantum impurity problems\, and\nhydrodynamics—showcasing both long-predicted effects finally brought into view and\nsurprising new phenomena.\n[1] N. Li et al.\, arXiv:2605.06666 (2026)\n\nBio\nNir Navon is an Associate Professor of Physics at Yale University. He received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (France)\, where he worked with Christophe Salomon and Frédéric Chevy on the thermodynamics of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. Afterwards\, he worked on trapped-ion quantum information in the group of Roee Ozeri at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel). From 2013 to 2018\, he was a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College\, Cambridge (UK)\, working with Zoran Hadzibabic on homogeneous Bose gases in optical box traps. He joined the Yale faculty in 2017.\n\nHis group has built an apparatus that produces strongly interacting Fermi gases in programmable potentials. This apparatus has made it possible to experimentally address quantum many-body problems where theory offers few\, if any\, reliable answers. The group's recent work includes the observation of the as-yet unexplained recombination dynamics of three-component fermions\, the emergence of sound in a Fermi fluid with tunable interactions\, the strongly driven Fermi polaron\, the first observation of the quantum Joule-Thomson effect for fermions\, and the emergence and breakdown of Fermi's Golden Rule in a many-body system. His awards and honors include a Packard Fellowship (2017)\, a Sloan Research Fellowship (2019)\, an NSF CAREER Award (2020)\, the New Horizons Lectureship in Physics at the Solvay Institutes (2023)\, Outstanding Referee of the APS (2023)\, and a Scialog Fellowship of the RCSA (2025).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reverie: The Student-led Exhibition Committee Fall 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nA reverie is a state between waking and dreaming\, a moment when the mind drifts beyond the immediate. It is a space where memory\, imagination\, desire\, and reality can overlap\, distort\, and take on new forms. In these moments\, the familiar can become strange\, and the ordinary can become something unexpected.\n\nReverie brings together student works that explore the space between what is known and what is felt. Across painting\, oil pastel\, ceramic\, digital art\, animation\, and mixed media\, the artists move through imagined landscapes\, intimate encounters\, memories\, figures\, and fragments of the everyday. These works blur the boundaries between observation and imagination\, allowing emotion and perception to reshape what we recognize.\n\nRather than depicting dreams literally\, Reverie considers dreaming as a way of seeing. The works reflect moments of escape\, introspection\, fantasy\, and transformation\, where the subconscious can surface and reality becomes open to interpretation. \n\nReverie was conceived and curated by members of the Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC)\, and features work by eight SEC members at the Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition includes ten works across oil on canvas\, oil pastel\, ceramic\, digital art\, digital animation\, and mixed media.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Theories of Harm\, Theories of Repair: Severe Maternal Morbidity and the Case for Abolitionist Care
DESCRIPTION:Join the Women's and Gender Studies Department for a talk by CNM Jessica Tsipe Angelson!\n\nOpen to all\, but especially for students of Gender and Health\, Professor Angelson will be discussing survivors' experiences of severe maternal morbidity. \n\nThis event is being held in Room 2239 Lane Hall\, and there is an option for attendance by Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/98461041635). \n\n*Jessica Tsipe Angelson is an Assistant Professor of Midwifery and Women’s Health at Thomas Jefferson University\, where she is leading the reimagining of the only Doctor of Midwifery program in the country. Her current research focuses on the observed increase in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in the United States and on clinical guideline development for survivors of SMM. Her broader interests include maternal health systems and midwifery workforce development\, systems to support physiologic birth\, global trends in cesarean birth\, and reproductive justice. She has been a midwife since 2014\, working in hospitals\, homes\, and a freestanding birth center.*

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEAS Community Conversation: Bracing for Impact: Caring for Yourself and Others During Election Season
DESCRIPTION:We all know that elections have consequences. Bracing ourselves for the impact of any outcome can be incredibly difficult when so much is at stake. During our October Community Conversation\, you will engage with fellow SEAS & PitE community members and discover ways you can protect your own peace of mind in the lead up and outcome of the upcoming 2026 midterm election. We will also make time for an optional Nature Walk to follow!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
