SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The galaxy's history under our feet: paleo-detection of cosmic rays with PRimuS
DESCRIPTION:The sources and history of cosmic rays are largely unknown because of the intrinsic deflection and delay imposed by cosmic magnetic fields. Minerals might offer a way to investigate this mystery from the rock record\, as they preserve the damage tracks of the particles that crossed them over their geological history. This idea\, known as paleo-detection\, is mostly known for rare-event searches\, such as WIMP recoils and neutrino interactions\, where nanometre-scale tracks and the need for ultraclean minerals require a demanding readout. Cosmic rays are the opposite case: the signal is expected to be abundant\, and the micron-to-tens-of-micron tracks can be revealed with simple etching and optical microscopy. \n\nI will present the simulation framework we built to predict the track-length spectrum for a given mineral and flux history. It combines MCEq and Geant4\, follows the overburden history of the sample\, and folds in detection efficiency and measurement effects. I will then show how these predictions are confronted with data in PRImuS\, our experimental proof of concept: chemical etching of obsidian\, argon-plasma etching of halite\, automated optical microscopy\, and OptimusPrimus\, a deep-learning tool for track recognition. The pipeline is validated on obsidian\, and its application to halite is the next step. I will conclude with the outlook toward the possible GALACTIC project\, based on light-sheet microscopy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: The surprising asymptotics of bingo
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Okta Verify Bingo in the graduate lounge\, consider an N by N square of cells. Every second\, a uniformly random cell is chosen (with replacement) and filled in. What is the expected amount of time until a bingo\, i.e. a fully filled in row\, column\, or diagonal? How does this grow asymptotically as N increases? The answer involves some interesting mathematics and may surprise you.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar> How Dynein Teams Adapt to Load and Coordinate Their Motors
DESCRIPTION:Cytoplasmic dynein drives long-distance transport along microtubules\, but how motor complexes adapt to mechanical loads and coordinate their activities remains poorly understood. I will present our discovery that the dynein–dynactin–BicD2 (DDB) complex dynamically recruits a third dynein under load through an auxiliary BicD2 adaptor that interacts with the dynein light intermediate chain (LIC)\, increasing force generation from 7 to 9 pN. I will also show how our investigation of the neurodevelopmental disease-associated DYNC1H1 mutation P3018S revealed that the trailing dynein determines the velocity of multi-dynein complexes\, while the leading dynein stimulates the trailing motor through its LIC. Together\, these findings uncover unexpected roles for LICs in load-dependent motor recruitment and inter-motor communication\, establishing new principles of dynein force adaptation and coordination.\n\n\nThe Gennerich Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms by which biomolecular motors generate force and motion in eukaryotic cells. We focus on understanding how defects in these processes contribute to human disease. Our research combines single-molecule biophysics\, molecular biology\, and biochemistry to study the function and regulation of microtubule-based motors—kinesins and cytoplasmic dynein—as well as RNA polymerase II during transcription elongation through chromatin.\n\nUsing a multidisciplinary approach that includes high-resolution optical trapping\, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy\, and CRISPR-Cas9-based genetic tools\, we dissect how these motor proteins convert chemical energy into mechanical work and how their activity is modulated in different cellular contexts. Our long-term goal is to uncover the design principles of biomolecular motors and to elucidate the molecular basis of diseases caused by impaired motor function.
