SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar Series> Rewriting the rules of DNA synthesis: Reverse transcriptases in antiviral defense
DESCRIPTION:CRISPR–Cas systems illustrate how noncoding RNAs (ncRNA) can program immune functions by targeting foreign DNA for degradation. Intriguingly\, a widespread family of defense-associated reverse transcriptases (DRTs) instead leverages noncoding RNAs to direct programmable DNA synthesis during antiviral defense. Here we investigate the mechanism of immunity mediated by tripartite DRT10 systems\, which rely on a membrane effector protein and RT-catalyzed generation of repetitive DNA. The RT associates with a structured ncRNA and uses a short template region to catalyze protein-primed\, processive synthesis of tandem DNA repeats. Repeat addition proceeds through iterative cycles of template-directed extension and realignment encoded within the ncRNA. This mechanism closely parallels the repeat-addition strategy of telomerase\, revealing an unexpected connection between antiviral RT systems in bacteria and conserved pathways of repetitive DNA synthesis in eukaryotes that maintain genome integrity.

DESCRIPTION:Michigan in Washington (MIW) is a full-semester program in Washington\, D.C.\, open to U-M students from all majors. Students complete a full-time internship during the day and take U-M courses in the evening. MIW provides support with the internship search\, application materials\, interviews\, housing\, and the transition to living and working in D.C.\nWinter 2027 applications are due September 25\, but we will begin reviewing applications and interviewing qualified students as they are submitted. Admission decisions will also be made on a rolling basis\, so we strongly encourage you to apply early rather than waiting until the deadline.\nPlease also keep in mind that our two required professional development sessions will be held on Saturday\, October 3\, and Saturday\, October 31 and they are mandatory.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Because fossils of our human ancestors (hominins) remain in their country of discovery\, museum collections relating to human origins predominantly consist of casts. These cast collections are often overlooked and undervalued in human origins research since they are not the original fossils. But\, these collections hold untapped research and teaching potential. During my internship\, I explored the 90-year legacy of human origins research at the Field Museum in Chicago through the reorganization of their hominin cast collection. \n\nThis talk highlights how I used my background on human evolution to contextualize the collection in support of teaching\, exhibition development\, and science communication. Overall\, this case study demonstrates how deeper investigations into museum collections can create new avenues for research and support broader museum goals.\n\nPresentation by Georgia Oppenheim (Museum Studies Program\; PhD candidate\, Biological Anthropology)
