SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Some Notes on Topics in Astrobiology
DESCRIPTION:Michael first joined Michigan Astro in 2013 as a postdoc working with Eric Bell\, developing assessments to measure instructional gains in introductory courses\, especially ASTRO 101 & 102. He continued in this role\, largely during summers\, until 2017\, when he became a Lecturer in the department\, teaching those and other introductory courses\, also working independently with a number of students from those courses in directed studies designed to introduce basics skills for research through analysis of data from the Kepler and Tess Missions. The studies resulted in multiple conference presentations and publications in IOP-Physics Education and TPT-The Physics Teacher\, as well as a book for AAS /IOP Publishing - Student Exoplanet Projects Using Data from the Kepler Mission. He is currently finishing another book with Elsevier Publishing - Naked Eye Astronomy-Observing the Sky without a Telescope\, based on teaching ASTRO 127 both in the planetarium and remotely. A recently completed series of five ASTRO-NOTES for The Physics Teacher about different strategies for teaching Life in the Universe\, developed when teaching ASTRO 106 & 115\, will be the main subject of this talk.\n\n10 years of teaching Life in the Universe in ASTRO 106-Aliens\, 115-Astrobiology\, as well as 101\, have resulted in the development of what have become useful strategies for covering several topics\, including possible habitability in our own solar system and beyond\, interstellar space travel\, and the Fermi Paradox and Drake Equation\, including examination of both through the lens of the Copernican and Anthropic Principles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:36th Annual Davis\, Markert\, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The annual Davis\, Markert\, Nickerson (DMN) Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom will take place on Thursday\, November 5\, 2026\, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. The event will support both in-person attendance and a livestream. Light refreshments will be provided for those who can attend in person. This lecture is sponsored by the Faculty Senate as a showcase event underscoring the U-M community’s collective interest in academic freedom.\n\nThe invited speaker is Michael Ignatieff\, who served as President and Rector of Central European University (CEU) between 2016 and 2021\, the turbulent years which saw CEU’s expulsion from Budapest and its re-establishment in Vienna. He now is a professor in CEU’s department of historical studies. Ignatieff came to CEU after serving as Edward R. Murrow Chair of Press\, Politics\, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.\n\nAbstract:\n\nIn 2017\, Central European University in Budapest became the first free institution in Europe to be targeted by an authoritarian populist regime. Michael Ignatieff was Rector of CEU and led the fight against Victor Orban’s campaign to declare the university illegal and then have it expelled. Orban’s eventual victory—successfully forcing the university to relocate to Vienna—set the pattern for the attacks on ‘woke’ ‘liberal’ institutions in the United States. In a lecture commemorating McCarthy era battles to defend academic freedom\, Ignatieff identifies the ideological and geopolitical factors that have made the battle to defend academic freedom a global challenge.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Preprint Seminar: Hodge\, Tate\, and standard conjectures
DESCRIPTION:OpenAI recently posted two preprints which have as consequences: the Hodge conjecture for CM abelian varieties\, the Tate conjecture for abelian varieties over finite fields\, and Grothendieck's standard conjecture of Hodge type for abelian varieties. I'll discuss the preprints.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: Non-commutative Singular SPDE
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will describe some progress on rough stochastic dynamics in the setting of non-commutative probability theory - examples will include the stochastic quantization of Fermionic quantum field theories and the setting of free probability. This is based on joint work with Martin Hairer and Martin Peev.
