SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Half-Life: The Science of Letting Go and Becoming New
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What happens when the life you worked so hard to build begins transforming into something entirely new? Dr. Angelique Johnson traces her unexpected journey from earning a PhD in electrical engineering and building neurotechnology through MEMStim\, to engineering visions through Vissionaireum\, to founding Spiritual Capital Inc.\, where she explores faith as a form of capital for building ventures with eternal impact. Drawing on the scientific concept of half-life\, Johnson offers a new way to think about transformation: sometimes becoming who you were meant to be requires letting go of who you worked so hard to become. Her story challenges us to consider whether the second half of life can become greater than the first—if we are willing to release what was and embrace what’s new.\n\nBio: Dr. Angelique Johnson is a scientist\, entrepreneur\, licensed minister\, and speaker dedicated to uniting innovation\, faith\, and impact. She is the Founder of MEMStim \, a neurotechnology company\; Vissionaireum\, a venture studio for purpose-driven entrepreneurs\; and Spiritual Capital Inc.\, a nonprofit that equips leaders\, ministries\, and businesses to harness faith as capital for building ventures and creating lasting community impact. As Director of Training at the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA)\, Dr. Johnson leads the Creative Capital Access Collaborative (CCAC)\, an initiative advancing innovative approaches to capital access for entrepreneurs and the organizations that support them. She has spoken on platforms from Capitol Hill to the United Nations and serves on boards advancing entrepreneurship and equity. Featured by NBC\, NPR\, and PBS\, she champions passion\, resilience\, and faith as tools for celebrating progress\, overcoming setbacks\, and building institutions that create generational impact.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Cosmological Seed Magnetic Field from Inflation
DESCRIPTION:A cosmological magnetic field of nG strength on Mpc length scales could be the seed magnetic field needed to explain observed few microG large-scale galactic magnetic fields. I first briefly review the observational and theoretical motivations for such a seed field\, two galactic magnetic field amplification models\, and some non-inflationary seed field generation scenarios. I then discuss an inflation magnetic field generation model. I conclude by mentioning possible extensions of this model as well as potentially observable consequences.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robotics Department Alumni Award Seminar: Robotics is inherently multidisciplinary\, and you should be too!
DESCRIPTION:Robotics Alumni Award Seminar \nSpeaker: Emma Reznick\, PhD\nResearch Scientist\, Fauna Robotics\n\nTitle: Robotics is inherently multidisciplinary\, and you should be too! \nDate: Friday\, October 16\, 2026\nTime: 3:00 - 4:15pm ET\nLocation: FRB 2300 with Zoom\nZoom Link: https://myumi.ch/e7Gdj\nMeeting ID: 971 8312 3952\nPasscode: 711990\n\nAbstract: \nThe robot that navigates a warehouse or assists in surgery is never the work of one discipline. It fuses mechanics\, control theory\, vision\, machine learning\, embedded firmware\, and domain-specific knowledge in real time where a bug can destroy the robot or hurt someone near it. The nastiest bugs never sit inside a single discipline\; they hide in the seams between them. A motion policy that looks wrong turns out to be an incorrect friction model.\n\nThis talk walks through a series of real failures and the attempts to fix each one. Every bug started in one domain and was solved in another\, and each one is a case for pairing depth with breadth.\n\nSpeaker Bio: \nEmma Reznick is a Research Scientist with Fauna Robotics\, an Amazon company. Her work focuses on the development of novel robotic platforms and narrowing the sim-to-real gap through modeling and hardware characterization. She got her bachelors in Biochemistry and Electrical Engineering from Colorado College\, and then pursued her PhD with Dr. Robert Gregg at the University of Texas at Dallas (MS\, Biomedical Engineering) and the University of Michigan (PhD Robotics). She now lives in New York City and gets to work with robots every day.
