SUMMARY:Performance:Staff Explorer Pass | *Dead Man’s Cellphone*: A Production of UM-Flint Fine & Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:After a man dies quietly in a café\, an ordinary woman answers his endlessly ringing cell phone and finds herself entangled in the lives of his grieving family\, mysterious past\, and unexpected romance. Sarah Ruhl's inventive comedy explores identity\, morality\, grief\, and our universal longing to connect\, weaving together absurd humor with surprising emotional depth. Equal parts quirky\, poetic\, and profoundly human\, *Dead Man’s Cellphone* reminds us that every life leaves echoes in the people who answer the call.\n\n+2 hours with intermission+\n+Directed by William Irwin+\n+UM-Flint Theatre: 327 E Kearsley St\, Flint+\n\nPerformances: \n+Fri\, Oct 16 • 7:30 p.m.+\n+Sat\, Oct 17 • 7:30 p.m.+\n+Sun\, Oct 18 • 2 p.m.+\n+Fri\, Oct 23 • 7:30 p.m.+\n+Sat\, Oct 24 • 7:30 p.m.+\n+Sun\, Oct 25 • 2 p.m.+\n\nTo claim tickets:\n+Visit myumi.ch/J4AEV +\n+Select 2 UM Faculty/Staff Tickets +\n+Enter code \"UMSTAFF\" in the Promo Code box*+\n\n*Located near top of page by View Cart\n\n••••••\n*This program is part of the Michigan Arts Festival Staff Explorer Pass. SUMMARY:Performance:UMS presents The Rose Sonata
DESCRIPTION:As part of the leadup to our 150th season in 28/29\, UMS is commissioning several new works across artistic disciplines. The first of these features a new\, full-length dance collaboration with New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns and co-choreographers and dancers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber\, whose Obsidian was performed by Ballet BC last season.\n\nThis new piece\, titled The Rose Sonata\, was developed on the U-M campus in June 2026. Featuring two pianists and six dancers\, the new work receives its world premiere at the Power Center in October. Smith and Schraiber started their careers as dancers with the Batsheva Dance Company and now return as world-renowned creators whose choreography has been commissioned by The Paris Opera Ballet\, Royal Danish Ballet\, National Ballet of Canada\, and Martha Graham Dance Company\, to name just a few.\n\nTheir collaborative approach to dance theater results in a stunning new ensemble work that features New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns. Mearns began studying dance at age 13 in South Carolina and entered the School of American Ballet\, the official school of New York City Ballet\, in 2001. She has been a principal dancer with the company since 2008.\n\nPhotos © Lisa Spindler\, Instagram @lisaspindlerstudio

SUMMARY:Performance:Tallest Man on Earth with special guest Gwenifer Raymond
DESCRIPTION:“The Tallest Man on Earth has released some of the best modern folk music of this century. He writes elegant\, homespun ballads that draw you in toward the proverbial campfire.” –GQ\n\nCritics often draw comparisons between The Tallest Man on Earth and Bob Dylan\, citing similarities in both songwriting and vocal style. Matsson himself has acknowledged Dylan's influence\, revealing that he started listening to him at the age of fifteen. Fascinated by Dylan's covers\, he delved into their origins\, which gradually introduced him to early American folk artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. However\, Matsson is quick to distance himself from being part of any specific tradition\, stating\, “I don’t want to be part of a tradition. I just want to do what feels natural to me. This is how I play\, and this is how I write songs.”
