SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley
DESCRIPTION:\n\nDanielle Brathwaite-Shirley is a London- and Berlin-based artist and game designer whose practice prioritizes active engagement. Working predominantly in animation\, sound\, performance\, and video game development\, the artist’s practice focuses on intertwining lived experience with fiction to imaginatively retell and archive the stories of Black Trans people\, creating participatory spaces to envision more inclusive futures.\n\nTheir projects often take the form of immersive video games\, where players navigate choices that confront their assumptions and biases\, fostering deeper conversations about identity\, privilege\, and systemic oppression. Through their innovative use of digital media\, the artist not only preserves histories but also envisions inclusive futures where the voices of those that are often ignored or erased become central. Their work is both “archive and insurgency\,” a catalyst for dialogue\, inviting audiences to reflect on their roles within broader societal structures\n\nDanielle Brathwaite-Shirley has presented solo exhibitions at Serpentine North\, London (2025)\; LAS Foundation\, Halle am Berghain\, Berlin (2024)\; Fundació Joan Miró\, Barcelona (2024)\; Studio Voltaire\, London (2024)\; Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève (2024)\; SCAD Museum of Art\, Savannah (2023)\; Villa Arson\, Nice (2023)\; HAU Hebbel am Ufer\, Berlin (2023)\; FACT\, Liverpool (2022)\; Project Arts Centre\, Dublin (2022)\; Skänes konstförening\, Malmö (2022)\; Arebyte Gallery\, London (2021)\; QUAD\, Derby (2021)\; and Focal Point Gallery\, Southend-on-Sea (2020). SUMMARY:Well-being:Climate Café: Building Community Resilience and Support
DESCRIPTION:Connect with fellow U-M and Ann Arbor community members in a safe space to pause\, connect\, and talk about their experiences regarding the environment and climate change\, a.k.a. Climate Café. In this small group\, we encourage participants to share their stories and discover connections between our experiences. During this event\, participants will bridge gaps between climate emotions and sustainability action in our lives\, and learn how to care for ourselves and others. Light refreshments will be provided.\n\nWe wish to provide uninterrupted discussion time\, and make sure that everyone has a chance to speak and be heard. Due to the nature of this activity\, participants should arrive at the start time promptly. \n\nThe event is free and open to any community member\, but registration is required. Please email pba-information@umich.edu with questions. The Climate Café structure utilized is inspired by Dr. Michaela Zint’s EAS581 course and the Climate Psychology Alliance-North America (CPA-NA) café framework. This event is brought to you by LSA Sustainability\, Student Life Sustainability\, the Planet Blue Ambassador program\, and City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Defining the Discipline of Robotics for Excellence and Equity in an AI-driven World
DESCRIPTION:Start with a simple question: What is the best major for a student to become a roboticist? In my role leading the creation of the Robotics Undergraduate Major at Michigan\, we tackled this question through the curricular challenge of how to both: 1) educate people to put ideas of the robotics discipline into practice and 2) endow them with the intellectual lens for creating new ideas that extend the frontiers of the robotics discipline -- where mobility and dexterity through humanoid robots are poised to have a transformative impact in our increasingly AI-driven world.\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss my work to both advance the state of the art in semantic understanding for robotics and prepare students for possible futures where robotics and AI are abundant and ubiquitous. I will present the design\, launch\, and innovations for the Michigan Robotics Major for undergraduates\, as robotics emerges into its own as a true academic discipline. I will describe highlights from research in semantic 3D perception for mobile manipulation robots (including humanoids) to understand the form and function (or affordances) for a diversity of objects in common environments. I will also share insights from my role as Program Chair of the AAAI-26 Conference (and its roughly 30\,000 submissions) and how this role\, and my experiences with Amazon AWS Machine Learning University\, has reshaped my perspective on AI for teaching at the university level. Finally\, I will discuss new efforts in my course this semester to formulate \"mutation assessments\" that gauge student understanding of agentically coded projects.
