SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series -  Ecological opportunity through Deep Time: Looking through the lens of insects
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - Ecological opportunity is often invoked to explain major evolutionary radiations\, but how opportunities arise\, are exploited\, and ultimately become constrained remains less clear. Using insects as a lens\, I explore these processes across scales: from how the transition from gymnosperm- to angiosperm-dominated ecosystems reorganized insect diversification\, to how generalist interactions preceded specialization in Hymenoptera\; how deep evolutionary history structures global bee biogeography\; and how phylogeny and ecology shape insect elemental stoichiometry. Finally\, I use the fossil history of ants to ask how competition\, facilitation\, and diversity dependence allow biodiversity itself to reshape future evolutionary opportunities. Together\, these studies view ecological opportunity not as a single event\, but as a dynamic process that is continually created\, filtered\, and reconstructed through deep time.

It’s like a mental workout\, training the mind to focus on a single thought amid the 60\,000 that pass through daily. With 3 core practices it cultivates effortless concentration\, heightened awareness\, and presence in the moment\, allowing a shift from thinking to feeling. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/7JPzN\n\nThe rise of Chinese-linked criminal actors in Southeast Asia – including cyber scammers running fake online romance schemes for financial extortion – has disrupted traditional narratives of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure investment strategy. Counter to the \"romantic\" Silk Road imagery the BRI commonly draws on\, these activities are forcing a reconfiguration of political and economic realities across the region\, shifting attention toward changing practices of digital economy and governance along the BRI. This paper introduces the concept of 'variegated govotolerance' to explain why governments and citizens have (to varying degrees) come to tolerate\, regional cybercriminal activity linked to Chinese actors.\n\nTom Narins is an associate professor of geography\, planning\, and sustainability at the University at Albany with research interests in the critical geopolitics of China's growing engagement with the global economy.\nHis current research examines the political and economic tensions associated with “Global China” in terms of both traditional and digital infrastructure\, with a special focus on China’s digital expansion across the Global South. As a political and economic geographer\, Tom has published on sovereignty issues relating to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as well as on official Chinese lending to BRI-participant countries after the coronavirus pandemic. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Providing Healthcare in American Indian Communities
DESCRIPTION:What does it really mean to have access to healthcare? Have you ever considered what it takes to provide effective\, culturally responsive care in American Indian communities?\n\nJoin Dr. Sophina Calderon and Nicholas Cushman\, PharmD\, MHA\, BCACP\, for a conversation about the barriers affecting healthcare access in American Indian communities and the role pharmacists play in addressing them\, from ensuring patients have access to medication to providing the culturally responsive care they need.\n \n - - -\n \nMcKesson Foundation Health Equity Speaker Series\n\nDisparities in health and healthcare have been are prevalent\, particularly in underserved or minority communities\, as a result of a variety of factors such as birthplace\, housing\, education\, race\, age\, sexual identity and other nonmedical factors. These factors are commonly referred to as the social determinants of health (SDOH). As a result of SDOH\, quality healthcare and treatment can be difficult to access for many who don’t fall into the dominant group and must confront barriers to receive treatment.\n\nExamples of barriers to adequate healthcare treatment include poverty\, lack of access to quality education or positive social activities\, and unhealthy environmental factors. These factors must be addressed in order to achieve positive health outcomes and equity in access to healthcare and treatment for all. To help illuminate and educate around issues involving social determinants of health\, the College of Pharmacy and the McKesson Foundation have teamed up to launch the McKesson Foundation Health Equity Speaker Series.\n\nFor the past two years the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan in partnership with the McKesson Foundation has hosted a speaker series based on the topic of health equity. The McKesson Foundation is dedicated to advancing health outcomes for all with the mission to removing barriers to quality healthcare across the country\, especially for vulnerable and underserved communities. The College of Pharmacy also has a longstanding history of fighting to address addressing disparities in healthcare and is a leader in the fight for equitable healthcare for all individuals. This alignment in values and mission of both organizations led to the provision awarding of a grant to resulted in the College of Pharmacy being awarded a grant in 2022 to launch what we now call the McKesson Foundation Health Equity Speaker Series\, with the goal of educating the UM community and inspiring those around us to find solutions that address inequities in healthcare and beyond.\n\nAbout our Funder\, the McKesson Foundation\nThe McKesson Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to improving health outcomes for vulnerable and underserved populations. It focuses on initiatives that address healthcare disparities\, promote patient-centered care\, and support cancer care and survivorship. Through grants\, partnerships\, and employee-driven giving programs\, the foundation aims to foster innovative solutions that enhance community health and well-being.
