SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Latin American and Carribean Studies
DESCRIPTION:The Latin American & Caribbean Studies (LACS) RIW is an interdisciplinary space to explore the history\, culture\, politics\, and arts of Latin America and the Caribbean. This RIW invites dialogue among students working on a wide range of sub-regions\, times\, and topics\, many from distinct methodological perspectives. Our goal is to bring seemingly disparate interests together in an intellectually productive space that deepens participants' understanding of this expansive region. This RIW hopes to serve as the academic node that connects seemingly disparate scholars of Latin America into one productive space. Through our events and meetings\, graduate students and faculty will be able to more effectively expand their interdisciplinary understanding\, create connections across the university\, and support each other in their academic journey.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS Job Search Series - Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:This workshop series helps graduate students and \npostdoctoral fellows build the professional skills needed to succeed in \ntoday’s competitive job market. With a focus on biomedical and life \nsciences\, and biomedical engineering\, you will gain the strategies and \nconfidence to pursue careers in academia\, industry\, or beyond. Through \ninteractive sessions that blend presentations with hands-on activities\, \nyou will practice proven approaches to job applications\, networking\, \ninterviewing\, and career planning\, so you can stand out to employers and\n take the next step with confidence.Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this series\, you will be able to:Craft strong application materials that showcase your research expertise and transferable skills using the W.H.O. method.Build connections and network effectively with a strong elevator pitch and an optimized LinkedIn profile (Headline-About-Experience format).Succeed in interviews by applying the S.T.A.R. method and approach salary negotiations confidently.Design a strategic job search with S.M.A.R.T. goals and plan long-term career growth through an Individual Development Plan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Orbit transversality for abelian varieties
DESCRIPTION:The dynamical Mordell–Lang problem asks how one forward orbit intersects a subvariety. We consider a complementary question over number fields\, allowing passage to a suitable finite extension: can a proper Zariski-closed subset meet every rational grand orbit?\nAssuming a Zariski-dense forward orbit\, Pasten and Silverman answered this question negatively for linear automorphisms of projective space and for self-morphisms of geometrically simple abelian varieties. We will see that the answer is no for every dominant self-morphism of an abelian variety\, without the dense-orbit assumption. If time permits\, we will also discuss the case of projective space.
