SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Low-Energy Physics in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber Neutrino Detectors
DESCRIPTION:Liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detectors have become the global technology of choice for performing neutrino flavor oscillation measurements with accelerator neutrino beams.  The millimeter-precision 3D images these detectors produce contain meters-long tracks and showers generated by neutrino interaction products\, as well as mm-scale blips generated by isolated MeV-scale energy depositions.  While GeV track and shower features have been extensively leveraged for oscillation and neutrino-nucleus cross-section measurements\, MeV-scale blip features are comparatively under-studied\, despite their ability to uniquely access a range of physics and astrophysics signatures.  In this talk\, I will overview the physics benefits of MeV-scale reconstruction in neutrino LArTPCs\, including solar and supernova neutrino burst detection\, improved particle identification and hadronic calorimetry for beam neutrino measurements\, and more.  I will also present work performed by the LArTPC-focused Littlejohn Neutrino research Group experiment at IIT that has created new low-energy LArTPC reconstruction tools\, demonstrated new MeV-scale LArTPC physics capabilities\, and performed new particle physics measurements relying on these new techniques.

DESCRIPTION:Has this ever happened to you? You're sitting down to prove a lemma\, but none of your ideas seem to work out! At the same time\, you've tried a number of counterexamples\, but none of them seem to disprove your result! In this talk\, we'll cover how this may not be your fault: there exist mathematical statements which can neither be proved or disproved from our system of axioms. We'll sketch a technique for proving these sorts of independence results with the classical example\, the continuum hypothesis.

DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. DESCRIPTION:This Coffee Talk will bring together scholars and practitioners to explore the future of the Great Lakes Compact and the broader governance systems that support transboundary freshwater management in an era of accelerating climate\, ecological\, and social change. As pressures on water resources intensify—from shifting precipitation patterns and lake level variability to growing demands from communities\, agriculture\, industry\, and ecosystems—the resilience of existing governance frameworks is increasingly being tested.\n\nThe conversation will examine how institutions such as the Great Lakes Compact\, along with binational and regional organizations\, can be “future-proofed” to remain adaptive\, equitable\, and scientifically informed under deep uncertainty.
