SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering (BME 500) Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Mechanobiology and Synthetic Cells: Understanding and Engineering Adaptive Cellular Systems\n\nAbstract:\nBiological cells and synthetic cell-like systems both rely on dynamic membranes\, molecular organization\, and mechanical interactions with their surroundings to sense\, respond\, and adapt. In this seminar\, I will discuss our lab’s efforts to understand and engineer these behaviors across living and synthetic systems. The first part of the talk will focus on cellular mechanobiology\, with an emphasis on cellular unjamming in three-dimensional environments. While unjamming transitions have been widely studied in collective cell migration and tissue remodeling\, their regulation in 3D remains less understood. I will describe our work investigating how cells transition between solid-like and fluid-like collective behaviors in physiologically relevant environments\, and how these transitions are coupled to cell-generated forces\, matrix interactions\, and multicellular organization.\n\nThe second part of the talk will shift toward bottom-up synthetic biology and the construction of synthetic cells that can sense and respond to environmental cues. I will present our work developing pH-sensing synthetic cells\, designed to detect chemical changes in their surroundings and produce measurable biochemical or physical responses. I will also discuss our efforts to engineer desiccation-resistant synthetic cells\, motivated by the need to create robust cell-like systems that can survive extreme or fluctuating environmental conditions. Together\, these projects highlight how principles from cell mechanobiology\, membrane biophysics\, and synthetic biology can be integrated to understand the design rules of living systems and to build programmable\, resilient cellular mimics.     \nBio:\nAllen Liu received a B.Sc. with Honors in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2007\, followed by postdoctoral training at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. He established his research group in 2012 and is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, Biomedical Engineering\, and Biophysics\, as well as Associate Chair for Graduate Education in Mechanical Engineering\, at the University of Michigan.\n\nHis research focuses on cellular mechanotransduction and bottom-up synthetic biology\, integrating approaches from quantitative cell biology\, synthetic biology\, biophysics\, and microfluidics. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and delivered more than 100 invited presentations. His honors include the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award\; recognition as a Young Innovator by Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering and as a Rising Star by the Biomedical Engineering Society\; and selection as a Future of Biophysics speaker at a Burroughs Wellcome Fund symposium at the Biophysical Society Meeting. He is an elected Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry\, and a recipient of the Endeavour Executive Fellowship in Australia and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in Germany.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Managing the emission and absorption of thermal radiation in large scale energy technologies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThermal radiation and thermal storage can play crucial roles in alleviating the intensifying pressure on energy systems caused by surging electricity demand\, extreme weather\, and supply-chain constraints. This talk will focus on the development of advanced\, scalable materials for managing thermal radiation and their integration with thermal storage systems. Hot and cold thermal storage is a scalable\, low-cost solution that is maturing rapidly and seeing growing global adoption. To charge and discharge these storage systems\, we have developed materials that control solar and thermal radiation while overcoming fundamental challenges in broadband spectral control\, scalability\, and material stability in harsh environments.\n\nBiography: \nAndrej Lenert is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan\, where he leads the Lab for Efficient and Enduring Energy Systems (LE3) which conducts research on materials and devices that convert light (photons) into valuable products such as electricity\, high-grade heat\, and sustainable chemicals. He is a pioneer in the fields of thermal photonics and thermophotovoltaics (TPVs). His research group at UM established thin-film back-reflector TPV cells\, now widely used in the manufacture of high performance TPV systems. Dr. Lenert guided the development of air-bridge TPVs from invention to technology and co-founded Heat2Power to see their translation into the market. His inventions include bifacial and multi-terminal TPVs\, aerogel solar collectors\, and high-albedo radiative coolers. Prior to UM and H2P\, he received his PhD at MIT in 2014 where he focused on the development of nanophotonic solar TPV devices which made the MIT Technology Review 2017 list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies.\n\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location\, please check the related link the week of this event

DESCRIPTION:Join the Departments of Women's and Gender Studies and Sociology on September 17\, 2026 at 4pm in LSA Room 4154 for \"Death's Intimacies: Water\, Gender\, and Alternative Belongings.\"\n\nThis presentation explores the gendered tending of the dead among South Asian Muslims and Sikhs in the North American diaspora. Focusing on sensory and affective practices of washing and preparing bodies\, it reads water as a medium of transition and passage\, inviting us to think beyond political borders toward alternative understandings of belonging.\n\nJyoti Puri is a feminist sociologist whose research and teaching primarily focuses on structural and institutional forms of regulation from the perspectives of marginalized subjects. Through her books and numerous essays\, she explores how states and nations govern bodies\, genders\, sexualities\, and death\; examines the transnational aspects of governance shaped by colonial histories and postcolonial legacies\; and strives to decenter Eurocentric theory and perspectives. She is the winner of Jessie Bernard Award (2021) from the American Sociological Association (ASA)\, as well as the Simon-Gagnon Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) from the ASA's Sexualities Section.
