SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Development of Quantum Sensors for Precision Measurements based on Coherent Transient Effects\, Optical Lattices\, and Atom Interferometry
DESCRIPTION:We review distinctive experimental techniques that rely on coherent transient effects\, optical lattices\, and atom interferometry that have realized varied applications including precise measurements of atomic lifetimes\, masses of dielectric particles\, atomic diffusion\, centre of mass velocity\, and gravitational acceleration. We show that the two-pulse photon echo technique is capable of realizing a precise determination of the Rb 5P_{3/2} excited state lifetime. We describe time domain techniques that track the motion of dielectric microparticles confined by free space optical tweezers and measure particle masses with a sensitivity of 10^{-16} kg. We detect the motion of Rb optical lattices in a buffer gas environment to obtain comprehensive measurements of atomic diffusion. Comparisons with theoretical calculations suggest the basis for a quantum pressure sensor capable of calibrating commercial pressure gauges. We outline a frequency domain technique for the realization of state-of-the-art velocimeters using laser cooled atoms. Finally\, we review recent results from a frequency domain echo atom interferometer that uses ultracold rubidium atoms channelled into an optical lattice to realize a gravimeter. All these experiments have relied on low cost\, homebuilt\, diode laser systems.\n\n*Work supported by CFI\, OIT\, NSERC\, OCE\, The Helen Freedhoff Memorial Fund and York University

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FEAST (Faculty Engaged Arts + Student Teams) Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining an interdisciplinary arts research team? Join the University of Michigan Arts Initiative for a FEAST Virtual Info Session to learn how students from across U-M can get involved in faculty-led arts research projects.\n\nFEAST (Faculty Engaged Arts + Student Teams) brings together undergraduate and graduate students from different disciplines to collaborate on faculty-led research projects that integrate the arts. Students contribute their own skills and perspectives to an interdisciplinary team while earning course credit for their participation.\n\nLearn more about the program and current projects recruiting here: https://arts.umich.edu/feast\n\nDuring this informal session\, we’ll introduce the FEAST program\, share current research opportunities\, explain how to apply and what participation involves\, and answer your questions about finding a project that fits your interests.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:NERS Undergraduate Open House
DESCRIPTION:First-year and undeclared second-year students can meet with our students\, faculty\, and student organizations. See what you can research with us in the hall of poster presentations. If ready\, students will also be allowed to declare their Engineering Physics or Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences major. Free food and swag will be provided!\n\nNERS Major\nWe are the #1 nuclear engineering program in the country\, and we're looking for students with strong physics and math skills\, and an interest in developing sustainable energy solutions\, nuclear weapons detection\, using the world's most powerful lasers\, and more. \n\nEngineering Physics Major\nNERS also oversees the Engineering Physics program. The program lets students define their own curriculum and carry out research in their focus areas. It's a good fit for motivated students who are drawn to a specific field of interest\, to define their own research\, and want a strong physics background.\n\nNERS Minor\nStudents in other majors can complement their degree with a minor in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences. The minor provides a foundation in nuclear science and technology while allowing students to explore applications in areas such as energy\, radiation\, materials\, medicine\, national security\, and more.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Guerline Jozef | 2026 Wallenberg Medal and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Guerline Jozef\, the co-founder and executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance\, will receive the 2026 Wallenberg Medal on Tuesday\, September 29th at 4:30PM in Rackham Auditorium. In keeping with the tradition of the Wallenberg Lecture\, Jozef will draw on her personal experience to share with the audience her understanding of how one person can make a difference.\n\nGuerline M. Jozef\, a servant leader rooted in faith\, is a globally recognized human rights advocate\, thought leader\, and strategist who has worked to transform the conversation on migration\, race\, and justice. Jozef is the executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA)\, a Haitian-American-women-led organization serving immigrants\, with a particular focus on Black immigrants at the US-Mexico border and beyond. With the HBA\, she has built a movement that centers people of African descent in migration while amplifying the voices of the most marginalized. She is the creator of “Tales from the Borderlands and Beyond\,” and co-founder of both the Black Immigrants Bail Fund (BIBF) and the Cameroon Advocacy Network.\n\nHer influence has been recognized nationally and internationally. She was named one of the Washingtonian’s 500 Most Influential People of 2025\, one of Politico’s 40 Most Influential People on Race\, Politics\, and Policy of 2021\, and one of the BBC’s Top 100 Women of 2024. She was honored with the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora IMPACT Award from the Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance (CariPhil)\, the 2021 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award\, the AFL-CIO’s 2024 GMLK Human Rights Award\, the 2024 Haitian Impact Awards\, and the 2023 Midwin Charles Legacy Award from the 1804 Haitian Roundtable. She has been recognized by the Women’s Refugee Commission (Voices of Courage Award\, 2024)\, The Haitian Times (Newsmaker of the Year\, 2022)\, the National Haitian-American Elected Officials Network\, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Arthur C. Helton Human Rights Award among others.\n\nMs. Jozef has been featured in Forbes\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Time Magazine\, The Miami Herald\, The Haitian Times\, Politico\, and DemocracyNow. She has testified before the United Nations\, the United States Congress\, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)\, and recently brought her advocacy to the international stage during the IV International Forum of Parlamentarians in Barranquilla\, Colombia. Guerline went to the border for Haitians—but she stayed for everyone seeking safety and protection. \n\n“Guerline Jozef is a powerful advocate for the dignity and rights of migrants who has linked the experience of migration at the US-Mexico border to global human rights movements. She works tirelessly to give voice to the marginalized and to shape a more just future for all\,” said Sioban Harlow\, chair of the Wallenberg Medal Executive Committee and Professor Emerita of Epidemiology\, Obstetrics and Gynecology\, and Global Public Health.\n\nFree and open to the public. Wheelchair and ADA accessible. ASL and CART provided.
