SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize\, while supplies last.\n\nJoin the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl\, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r)\, where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:Turning Leaves Retreat takes  place October 2-4\, 2026 near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Together participants will explore scenic trails\, gather around evening campfires\, and enjoy the slower rhythms of outdoor living. Plan to help create a supportive community that encourages curiosity\, gratitude\, and connection. \n\nNo outdoor experience is necessary. This retreat is designed to remove barriers to participation while creating space for reflection\, relaxation\, and authentic community. Through gentle hikes\, camp-cooked meals\, journaling\, mindfulness activities\, and meaningful conversation\, you'll discover the restorative power of spending intentional time outdoors. Register by Tuesday\, September 22\, 2026 to secure your spot! Cost: $400\n\nThe program takes place October 2–4\, 2026. Participants will spend two nights tent camping near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore before returning to the Adventure Leadership Resource Center located on Central Campus during the afternoon on Sunday\, October 4.\nThe program includes transportation\, meals during the weekend\, tent camping accommodations\, all group camping equipment\, guided activities\, and the opportunity to borrow personal camping gear — including a sleeping bag\, sleeping pad\, backpack\, and headlamp — at no additional cost. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.
