SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CA Seminar: The Second Vanishing Theorem in Ramified Mixed Characteristic
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: To a triple of a ring $R$\, an $R$-module $M$\, and an ideal $I$ we can associate the local cohomology modules $H^n_I(M)$. One classical problem dating back to a question of Grothendieck is to identify when these vanish for all $n > i$ and all modules $M$\, the smallest such $i$ we denote the cohomological dimension of $R$ with respect to $I$. Grothendieck showed that this is bounded by $d = \dim R$\, while a very simple condition on $\widehat{R}$ and $I\widehat{R}$ controls the vanishing at $d$. A more subtle topological condition controls the vanishing at $d-1$ for regular local rings as posed by Hartshorne in the late 60s\, and was proven in equicharacteristic in the early 70s. After 50 years it was shown to be true in unramified mixed characteristic\, and the main result of this talk is the ramified mixed characteristic case.\n\nWe will discuss the history of the problem\, as well as our solution in the ramified case. This proof can recover the vanishing in all characteristics\, providing a unified proof\, and requires only classical techniques making use of formal schemes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Does the Higgs boson talk to itself? The latest ATLAS search for di-Higgs production in the HH→bbττ decay channel
DESCRIPTION:The Higgs boson\, the most recently discovered particle in the Standard Model\, is predicted to be an elementary scalar boson which can interact with itself -- an interaction which has yet to be experimentally observed. Measuring the strength of the Higgs self-interaction could tell us if the Higgs is a composite particle\, about the shape of the Higgs potential\, and further illuminate the details of Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking. By searching for proton--proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider which produce two Higgs bosons at the same time\, we can directly probe the Higgs trilinear self-coupling. In this talk\, I will motivate and present results from the latest ATLAS search for di-Higgs production in the HH→bbττ (two b-quarks and two tau leptons) decay channel\, the most sensitive search of its kind to date\, and the prospects for ATLAS di-Higgs measurements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: The Mathematics of Domino Tilings
DESCRIPTION:Suppose we have a region that is a bounded subset of the square grid (such as a finite union of squares on an infinite chessboard). Consider the problem of tiling this region with 1x2 and 2x1 dominoes. There are several questions that arise: \n– How can we tell whether such a region is tileable in the first place?\n– If such a region is tileable\, then how many tilings exist?\n– What does a \"typical\" tiling look like?\nIn this talk\, we will introduce several theorems that answer these questions\, and explore basic examples that illustrate these results. We will also see how tilings of large Aztec diamonds can create some interesting surfaces!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Securing the Vote: Technology\, Evidence\, and Trust in the 2026 Midterm Elections
DESCRIPTION:How secure are our elections\, and how do we know?\n\nWith the November midterm elections approaching\, join University of Michigan experts and election-security leaders for a timely\, nonpartisan discussion about the systems\, technologies\, and safeguards that protect elections and help verify results.\n\nModerated by U-M Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Ravi Pendse\, the panel will feature J. Alex Halderman\, the Bredt Family Professor of Engineering and an election-cybersecurity researcher\; Walter Mebane\, professor of political science and statistics and an expert in election forensics\; and Mara Ostfeld\, research associate professor of public policy and an expert in survey research and public opinion. Together\, they will examine cybersecurity threats to election infrastructure\, voting technology and verification\, the role of audits and evidence in evaluating results\, and the challenge of maintaining public confidence in a rapidly changing information environment. \n\nDesigned for a broad audience\, the conversation will consider how experts identify genuine risks\, evaluate claims\, strengthen election resilience\, and support transparency and trust.\n\nMonday\, October 12\, 2026 • 3-4 p.m.\nUniversity Hall\, Alexander G.
