SUMMARY:Exhibition:Grand Vision
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Small Works
DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects\nfrom Detroit\n2020–2026 \n\nOctober 21 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MORE Committee Workshop: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start (Student Registration)
DESCRIPTION:Created by the MORE Committee\, these workshops are designed to strengthen the student–faculty mentoring relationship through the development of shared expectations\, sharing mentoring best practices\, and understanding of mentoring across differences.\n\nThe Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start Workshop is attended jointly by faculty mentors and their graduate student mentees. Mentors and mentees first participate in separate parallel sessions\, where they reflect on their own goals\, working styles\, and approaches to common challenges. Afterwards\, each student–faculty pair collaborates to create a written mentoring plan that outlines key elements such as needs\, objectives\, and mutual expectations. Among Rackham doctoral students who have drafted mentoring plans\, 83 percent report finding them helpful. Mentoring pairs are encouraged to consider attending the optional one-on-one discussion time at the end of the workshop\, where they have dedicated time to work together on developing the mentoring plan.\n\nSeparate registration for faculty is available at: https://myumi.ch/61V6J.
