SUMMARY:Performance:Come from Away
DESCRIPTION:*Come from Away* is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander\, Newfoundland\, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover\, when 38 planes\, carrying thousands of people from around the globe\, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11\, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers\, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music\, an open bar\, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.\n\n*Come from Away* has earned global success with 37 award nominations and 13 wins\, most notably Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. The show’s global presence resonates with audiences as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together.\n\nBook\, Music\, and Lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein\nDirected by Vincent J. Cardinal\nMusic Direction by Cynthia Kortman Westphal\n\n–––\n*Parking / Traffic alert for attendees:*\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/2026-construction\n

SUMMARY:Tours:Exhibition Tour: American Sampler with Jason Young
DESCRIPTION:Professor Jason Young will lead a conversation about *American Sampler: Activating the Archive*. This research-driven\, immersive exhibition in UMMA’s Vertical Gallery is a collaboration with the Joseph A. Labadie Collection of anarchism\, protest\, and social movements housed in the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center.\n\nThe exhibition centers on 1950s–1970s movements for Black freedom\, civil rights\, and antiwar activism\, clarifying the aspirations and effects as well as the violent opposition these movements encountered. *American Sampler* invites visitors to examine how legacies of grassroots organizing and protest in U.S. history shape the present.\n\nFree and open to the public. Please register.\n\n
